Beyond criticism at this point in time

Theroux's epic collection of train journeys is a classic of travel literature, packed with unforgettable scenes and characters, the CIA agents living on the beach in Vietnam, the Japanese porn shows, and the sadness in Afghanistan. We see these again with the perspective of more time and the pass of history between his journeys and our journeys (real or via CNN). We could criticize the lack of political correctness, or of the curmudgeonly ways of Mr. Theroux, but hopping on trains all over Asia, regardless of the local political environment, and writing beautifully about the trips is a lot harder to criticize. This the starting point with Theroux, if you like it here, you'll love Dark Star Safari and will collect a good pile of books. They make excellent books to read during your own travels. If it's not your thing, then try a Theroux novel, maybe Hotel Honolulu and see if that works better for you.

About the Author
Georges C. Benjamin, MD, is well-known in the world of public health as a leader, practitioner and administrator. Benjamin has been the executive director of the American Public Health Association, the nation's oldest and largest organization of public health professionals, since December 2002. He came to that post from his position as secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Benjamin became secretary of health in Maryland in April 1999, following four years as its deputy secretary for public health services. As secretary, Benjamin oversaw the expansion and improvement in the state s Medicaid program.

Funny, Insightful Read/Viewing

Certainly worth the money for those interested in the topic whether you are just a beginning in the history of healthcare or a season veteran. Good mix of visuals (the 'toons) and backstory on the various writers and where they came from (national political climate). Only weakness may be the highly evident progressive (Liberal) tone of the book...although that is to be expected and/or appreciated given the subject matter!

Principles of Optics

This is a great book that I have used often. This is a graduate text. You should have had an undergraduate course in optics first. A typical undergraduate text that I recommend is Optics by Eugene Hecht who also wrote the Schaum's Outline for Optics. This being a graduate text you should have taken math for each of the four years of your undergraduate studies. My graduate work is in Microelectronics & Photonics and I use the book now as reference book. This book covers the theory very well; I have not found any other book that even comes close.

Optics by Born and Wolf

This book is the most comprehensive and readable book in all my books collected in optics. I specifically like the chapters devoted to geometrical optics and the rigorous treatment of diffraction. I have do doubt at all in my assignment of five stars to this book. It is no wonder that many of the scientists and engineers in NASA have the book in their possession.

My lactation consultant recommended this book to me because of the issues that I was having with producing milk. I found this book very helpful and easy to read. It provides a thorough explanation of the milk making process and the various things that can adversely affect supply. I think its a really good idea to read this book while you are pregnant rather than waiting to read it until you are already having problems, like I did. It gives a lot of advice on a wide variety of topics.

The best chapter I thought was the chapter on all the different kinds of supplements you can take. This actually is what motivated me to do more of my own research and after talking it over with my lactation consultant and M.D. I started taking mothers milk tea w/ blessed thistle -Organic Mother's Milk Tea + FREE Nature's Way Blessed Thistle (100 Capsules). Since then I've been pumping more milk than I can use and haven't had any issues since. I would totally recommend these herbs for helping with milk production.

During my pregnancy, I really did not educate myself very well on the subject of breastfeeding. I regret this now and if I could go back in time I would have definitely added this book to my must read list. The more you know about yourself and the way your body produces milk, the more you can help yourself and your baby. And just as its never too early to start learning, it's never too later either so please, if you are pregnant or are already breast-feeding, do yourself and your baby a favor and pick up this book.

Why didn't I read this three kids ago?!

I had a horrible, HORRIBLE time feeding our first two kids. I never produced enough milk, in spite of doing everything the lactation consultants and every successful breastfeeding mom I knew told me to do. And it wasn't a small deficit, either...we're talking about being short by half their daily intake or more. When our third baby was born premature and I was faced with at least a month of exclusive pumping before I could even attempt to breastfeed him, I didn't have much hope that I'd be able to keep up. Even pumping 8x/day, I was only getting about 13 oz. I read this book, tried a couple of things, and shot up to 18 oz. immediately. After a few more weeks and trying some more recommendations (some of which worked, some of which didn't), I stabilized around 27-29 oz./day. I was amazed, considering my previous best with my other kids was about 14 oz./day (while taking fenugreek!). My little guy never did learn to breastfeed, but I managed to pump exlusively and exceed his demand for about 4.5 months, at which point I stopped pumping because I was struggling to balance my work and home life. I'm sure I have some underlying issue that prevents me from having the fantastic supply that many moms have, but either way, I was so excited that I did as well as I did for as long as I did. This book made a huge difference in that success. I felt encouraged and like there was some solution out there that would work for me, and I never, ever felt judged reading this book. I only wish I would have read this book when I was pregnant with our first child instead of waiting until I'd had two bad breastfeeding experiences and had a lot of emotional baggage around breastfeeding.

Much more than just low milk supply

I bought this book against my better judgement, because with my first daughter, it seemed that all the books about breastfeeding I tried to read were either judgemental (you must be doing something wrong) or obnoxiously smug (you are better than those who don't breastfeed). I was offended and put off by every book I read when my first daughter was born.

Flash forward more than seven years and I tried one more time to purchase a book on lactation and was blessed to read this book! I have the paper version, then when I finished, I purchased the Kindle version. I do not and never have had the true problem of low milk supply, in spite of PCOS. I am, however returning to work and figured this book might help me protect my supply and maybe increase it in the short term so I can store enough breastmilk for when business travel is unavoidable. This book has provided so much more than the title suggests. I understand so much more about my daily milk production cycle, my letdown, and even my emotional responses to nursing.

I can't thank the author enough, except I will be buying copies of this book for my daughters' pediatrician and my lactation nurse! I can't recommend this book enough if you want to understand what influences milk capacity, supply, letdown. If you are a spouse or partner or close support person of a breastfeeding woman - please read and share a copy with her!

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. --Gail Hudson

Turning my life around

As a Christian, I continually struggled with feeling depressed from being a doormat, and being nice because it was "part of the abundant Christian life." Everyone spoke about Christianity as being a joyful, full life that I would love and never want to return to the secular world. Then why did I feel so miserable? Why did the secular world seem so appealing, where I could be as nasty and selfish as I wanted to?
The answer was in "Boundaries". As I read the book, I could identify with something in every chapter. I'm the type of person who will let everyone else step all over me to keep themselves happy. As long as I didn't raise a ruckus, and the peace was kept, everything was okay, right? WRONG! Inside I was always seething with anger, and I was livid with the fact that I had to continually step out of the way for everyone else while they ran right over me.
Through reading this book, I realized that it's OK to set boundaries in all interactions; in fact, I now believe that it would be wrong NOT to set boundaries in things. Slowly but surely, with the help from this book's message, I've been setting boundaries for a happier life that's filled with more peace, joy, and abundance than ever.

Very good book.... even for an atheist like me

This book is truly excellent. In my own childhood I grew up with a domineering, imposing and dare I say it "bullying" father and a meek, mild, "anything for a quiet life", sweet as honey mother. I resented my Dad for riding roughshod all over my Mum as a kid but have learned as an adult how they both are responsible. With time I began to resent Mum for being such a wimp as well as my Dad for being a control freak. Now I just love them to pieces, because they are my dear parents.

Anyway, I grew up to be a controlling, abusive tyrant, just like my Dad was if not worse. This persisted until 2008 when the beautiful, adoring woman I married got tired of my treatment of her and left me. I would never have woken up, let alone **grown** up if she hadn't done this. With a lot of time and work from my side we got back together again and the type of "man" I used to be really disgusts me. With time and effort I have been able to put together healthy boundaries of behaviour I will and will not accept from others, and from myself.

The point is my wife took a stand, just as this book says to. And it worked. On me that is.

If you are an abused spouse take a radical stand. The more radical the better. Do exactly what this book tells you to do.

I have given the book four stars because I am an atheist (sorry to any religious folks, I just cannot believe any of it, even if I wanted to) and my "God filter" had to be on at all times. Still, it doesn't matter what source the help comes from and I wish I had come across this book five years ago. My two little kids will learn healthy boundaries as well so they don't grow up to be the basket case I was.

About the Author
Susanna Lee’s thoughtful revision of the footnotes for the Second Edition, expanding detailed references to historical figures and nineteenth-century French locales, will greatly assist students in understanding this complicated novel. She is Associate Professor of French at Georgetown University. She is the author of A World Abandoned by God: Narrative and Secularism, and has written numerous articles on nineteenth-century narrative literature, the history of ideas, and American crime fiction.

Robert M. Adams was Professor of English (Emeritus) at the University of California at Los Angeles. He was the author of many books, including Ikon: John Milton and the Modern Critics; Strains of Discord; Proteus, His Lies, His Truth: Discussion of Literary Translation; The Land and Literature of England; and Shakespeare―The Four Romances. In addition to the Norton Critical Edition of Utopia (he was translator and editor of the First and Second Editions), Professor Adams was editor of five other Norton Critical Editions, including The Prince by Machiavelli, Candide by Voltaire, and The Praise of Folly and Other Writings by Erasmus, the texts of which he also translated. He was a founding editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature.

my favorite book, so it should be yours too

This is a nice edition of the Red and the Black. It's compact and yet includes a number of additional materials including short historical and biographical sections, penetrating critical essays, and some excerpts from Stendhal's book on love and the autobiographical Life of Henri Brulard. I found the essays by Auerbach and Girard to be particularly good. Girard provides helpful historical/political context in his discussions of social psychology. His analysis, while being in accord with the tenor of Stendhal's own analyses, introduces a powerful terminology capable of addressing primary issues more explicitly. It's too bad that so much of his work remains untranslated. I think the essays are the real advantage of this edition. That said, I liked the translation, but I did not check it against the French or any other translations. It was clear and unencumbered by flowery or abstruse diction. My only point of comparison is the Oxford edition translated by Catherine Slater, which seems to match up well to the French. But this was some time ago. I couldn't really say if one was better than the other.

A colourful tale...

Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) is a classic novel that was very important to me in early formation of directions in life. I found I could identify quite strongly with Julien Sorel, who wanted a better life, a life of meaning and importance, and was torn about which direction in which to go.

The Red (symbolising the church, the scarlet of cardinal's robes) and the Black (symbolising the military, the uniform, etc.) were both options held out to me early; in fact, I rejected both for a while, but have found myself drawn back in the red direction.

The story is one of coming of age as a bookish fellow in a working-class family, then ambition (but not overpowering ambition; in fact, Julien's father wishes he had more), then shifting careers (rare in an era and country where one's path is usually set for life early; however, this was the post-revolution era in France, in which some things were giving way, some more than others, it seems). Julien is pulled by events rather than being the director and creator of realities; Julien finds he loves the affect of various roles in life (more than the substance and responsibilities that come with such roles) -- for instance, he loves the swagger and the horsey-ness of being a soldier, but doesn't particularly like to get dirty or have to fight. He likes the trappings of religious office, but isn't inclined so much to spirituality, and Julien ran up against this in seminary:

The seminary director said to Julien: `Truth is austere, sir. But our task in this world is austere, too, is it not? You must take care to guard your conscience carefully from this weakness: Excess of feeling for vain exterior charm.'

There is love, a love triangle in fact, romance and thwarted desires, and loves fulfilled, if not completely. It ends with a dramatic homicidal act, trial, an execution, and a most bizarre funeral. The melodramatic performance of Mathilde (re-enacting an earlier story with which she was familiar in which the heroine carried the severed head of her lover to his grave) provided the most animated conversation among ministers and psychologists I have ever witnessed.

Stendhal often built a character's name out of words that were descriptive, which is sometimes lost in translation as the names often don't get translated in the same way, or may have lost the immediacy of their meanings over time. Julien may be a play on Julian the Apostate, enemy of Christianity; Abbe Castanede is decidedly Spanish and inquisitional; Noiroud and Moirod come from words meaning swarthy and mottled; many other examples abound.

This is a very hard book to encapsulate in such a small space. It is not easy reading, but it is rewarding reading.

And again, an interior dialogue of Julien in seminary helps inform me, and keeps me thinking (both for and against in many ways):

`In the seminary, there's a way of eating a boiled egg which declares how far one has progressed down the saintly path....What will I be doing all my life? he asked himself; I'll be selling the faithful a seat in heaven. How will that seat be made visible to them? by the difference between my exterior and that of a layman.'

Stendahl is not to blame for editing vexations

I bought Norton's second edition of The Red and the Black because a translation by another publisher was clearly flawed—flaws detectable even by one who hasn't studied French. I was greatly disappointed when I began to find mistakes even in Norton's Introduction, which gave wrong page numbers for citations in the text.

To aid annoyed students and to assist rushed or lazy Norton editors, the corrections are: p. ix, RB 267 should be 274; p. xi, RB 304 should be 312; p. xii, RB 219 should be 225-226; p. xiii, RB 19-20 should be 25-26; p. xiv, RB 289 should be 297; p. xiv, RB 290 should be 297; p. xv, RB 192 should be 198; p. xvii, RB 265-266 should be 272-273; p. xvii, RB 253 should be 260; p. xviii, RB 149 should be 155.

And then, on the first page of the text, I'm distracted by a footnote that contains two sloppy parentheses, the first with a singular topic preceding the parentheses and containing a plural topic within the parentheses, therefore requiring a clumsy swirl of the head and need to reread when the reader stumbles over a singular verb after the parentheses. By the second set of parentheses I'm increasingly annoyed as I sort it out.

Just not worthy of Norton! How rushed were they to get RB into print that someone couldn't have taken a breath to fix these time-wasting distractions! And speaking of flawed translation, how is it possible that “time passed for [anyone in 1830] with the speed of light” (RB 99)? The phrase may have gained a rare scientific currency in 1865 with the studies of James Maxwell, but not until Einstein's theories swept through the scientific world in the advancing years of the twentieth century did the common man or writer start speaking of "the speed of light.”

Someone should have weeded out such a blatant anachronism—surely not in Stendahl's French prose.

And by the way, never read an Introduction of any book if it's your first reading: Pretend it's an Afterword, and save it for when you complete reading. You'll have a much better chance to weigh your own critical perceptions without being biased by someone else's.

More by the way: The Red and the Black is a comedy whose greatness can survive even these annoyances.

About the Author
Photographer and consultant, Bob also conducts workshops, lectures and private instruction On-Line in all phases of digital photography. Beginning serious photography in 1965, Bob explored conventional darkroom techniques in both B&W and color. His work at Polaroid R&D in silver emulsions along with his US patent for color printing give Bob a broad base in film photography. He was an instructor for both the Nikon and the Time Life Schools of Photography. He presented his first digital media production in 1984, founded the Olympus School of Digital Photography in 1998 and continues to work at the leading edge of digital technology. As digital photography continues to advance, Bob will continue to blend his unique background of film photography with his extensive experience in the digital world.

ensures nice LCD images and sub-optimal prints)

I bought the pdf version and find it very clear as well as concise! As I went through Mr DiNatale's procedures, and examples, the process became very enlightening of how he condensed down into a very practical series of calibration steps the ETTR procedure. Prior to his book and insights - I didn't know that the Histogram wasn't more than a crude guide to overexposure warnings and if followed, ensures nice LCD images and sub-optimal prints)! He explains with actual examples (the pdf images are lacking, but, his inclusion of the actual images on his website) critically shows exactly the detail and information one needs to verify that they are exposing and processing optimally.
This was the best (and probably cheapest} photography money I've ever spent on my personal photography improvement.

an important game changer

Very compelling argument and very easy to follow and understand . I've run some of the tests and am now shooting using DiNatale's process. It works. There is no question that I am now capturing much more information than before. The handbook format of the book makes it very portable and useful as a reference. I have not had time to follow all the suggested links but am looking forward to learning more. It is jammed full of information.

Important rethinking of exposure

This book is clearly written and therefore valuable to both technical audiences and those of us, like me, who are not so technical. The significant information boils down to the fact that cameras are misleading in showing blown out areas in the display feedback. Important information for amateurs like me who thought the camera was the best guide to exposure.
