As the craft beer craze continues to sweep the nation, more and more people are deciding to try their hand at creating their own perfect brew. In Craft Beer for the Homebrewer, beer writer and certified cicerone (think sommelier for beer) Michael Agnew merges the passions of consumption and creation into one definitive guidebook, designed for the craft beer lover who also happens to be a homebrew enthusiast. Agnew presents dozens of recipes adapted by craft brewmasters for the homebrewer to make in his or her own kitchen, basement, garage, or patio. Based on the actual production beers of featured microbreweries, these recipes cover the entire range of beer styles--ambers and pales, IPAs, stouts and porters, Irish and Scottish ales, Belgians, and wheats--representing craft breweries from across the United States. Each recipe is accompanied by full-color photography, an ingredient list, instructions for both the mash and extract brewer, and historical and anecdotal notes about the brewery that provided it. Agnew prefaces the book with an introduction to the craft beer industry, briefly discussing the major ingredients and required equipment that homebrewers will encounter inside. With its meticulous selection of delicious beer varieties, Craft Beer for the Homebrewer offers a beautifully designed collection of microbrews for the homebrewer on the cutting edge of the craft beer scene.

The craft-beer industry has exploded in recent years, with nearly 2,400 craft breweries in the U.S. and counting, and this has led to a renaissance in the hobby of home brewing. No longer do beer connoisseurs have to settle for that commercial American swill that Chicago newspaper columnist Mike Royko once famously wrote tastes as if it were brewed through a horse. Although the most comprehensive home-brew-recipe book may be Clone Brews (1998), by Tess and Mark Szamatulski, this entry differs from the usual clone approach by offering 38 authentic recipes contributed by the craft brewmasters themselves. Here you will find artisan pale ales, IPAs, porters, stouts, lagers, Belgians, and wheat beers that you can re-create in your own kitchen. Some of the more enticing offerings include Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner, from Schmaltz Brewing; Hop Stoopid and Little Sumpin Sumpin’, from Lagunitas Brewing Company; Buffalo Sweat, from Tallgrass Brewing Company; and Hazelnut Brown Nectar, from Rogue Ales. So many beers, so little time. --David Siegfried
Review
"American beer has come a long way from the bland brews of the 1970s to the wide range of present-day craft beers. Many of the popular brewing companies have home brew roots. Agnew, author of the blog A Perfect Pint, has put together a recipe book with help from others in the home brewing community including Billy Broas, Denny Conn, Matthew Schaefer, and Jordan Wiklund, in which each brewer was given a range of formulas to sample from commercial craft brewers. While the recipes are accompanied by straightforward instructions, they are definitely aimed at those who have made their own beer before. Furthermore, each beverage has been adjusted so that readers can make these recipes their own. Also included are descriptions of the beer produced and profiles of the craft brewery.VERDICT Although this book is not for the novice beer maker, the experienced brewer will find much to enjoy here."â??Library Journal

Brew Like the Pros!
As the craft beer craze continues to sweep the nation, the hobby of homebrewing is enjoying parallel growth. In this new book, beer writer and Certified Cicerone® Michael Agnew merges these two passions into a collection of pro-brewer–developed recipes for beer lovers who also happen to be homebrew enthusiasts. Inside, Agnew presents 38 recipes provided and adapted by craft brewmasters for homebrewers to make in their own kitchens, basements, or garages. Based on actual production beers representing 23 breweries, the recipes span the range of styles—pales and IPAs, stouts and porters, wheats and ryes, Belgians, pilsners, and more. Each is prefaced by a brief explanation of the style and the beer’s background and accompanied by color photography of the production versions as well as the breweries themselves. Craft Beer for the Homebrewer also includes instructions for both extract and mash brewers and sidebar profiles detailing the histories of the breweries and brewers represented, most of whom started out as homebrewers themselves. The result is a beautifully designed, thoughtfully assembled collection for homebrewers searching for new inspiration or looking to emulate the work of their favorite brewmasters.

Reverse Returns - Gifts from Craft Pros to Homebrewers and Neat Brewery Bios to Boot!
By Gary Spedding
Many homebrewers gravitate to professional brewing and build new recipes (grists in the jargon with unique hopping regimes). Now those turned pro are reversing the education - giving back to their former fellow homebrewers. This book covers about 38 now "classic" craft beers and how to brew them at home. From brewers as well known as Tallgrass, Epic, Lagunitas, August Schell, Shmaltz, Allagash, Odell, Cigar City, Blue Mountain, Stone, Rogue, Troegs and Avery and more (many of whom we know take quality and analyses of the beers they make very seriously) – these guys are now graciously giving away the farm (paying it forward in modern parlance) with their secret recipes.
There have been “brew beers like you buy before” but the new generation books (beyond the classic “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing”) are written by the brewers themselves – or at least as edited by Mr. Agnew. So first-hand accounts (extract efficiencies and hop utilization factors included!) for both liquid extract and all grain versions standardized to 5 gallon batches of these 38 beers ranging with styles from Pale Ales, IPA’s, Porters, Stouts, Wheats and Ryes, Belgian and Specialty and Lagers (the latter – 3 lagers worth looking at from the viewpoint of the difficulty in making them and the need to support a customer base who love this style of beer).
Featuring profiles of the Breweries and many of the Brewers with a nice spread of full color plates I’d imagine other professional brewers and “want to become pro brewers” will also peek into this book. Likely a “should be on every –serious - homebrewers shelf” too. For me a nice find to discover more about my own clients and favorite brewers.

This is one of the coolest brewing books I've ever seen
By James Ferrier
Absolutely awesome. I bought this book with no knowledge about it other than it had the 8 bit pale ale recipe in it. What I got was not at all what I expected. This is basically a homebrewers coffee table book. Beautiful pictures, excellent descriptions and tons of killer pro brewer recipes. This is one of the coolest brewing books I've ever seen

Happiness!
By Amazon Customer
So happy I found this book! I have been a home brewer for a year, so I am still a newbie! I have also found that it isn't always easy to find good and proven recipes. I have read most of the book and enjoy the little stories about the breweries, many of which I have the good fortune to have either visited or been able to taste their craft beers. I am so grateful that these wonderful brewers wanted to share their basic recipes! I truly appreciate being able to produce a facsimile in my own home! Yay! My first brew is currently in its second fermentation and I used the Allagash Black recipe. If you are a home brewer, I highly recommend this book!
