Collection of fun and simple projects for Arduino
By Tim Crothers
What a fun book! I really enjoyed this book. I've only built two of the nine projects so far but both worked great and they were very straightforward. Ideally I'd give the book 4.5 stars because I do think the projects could use a little more "why" and I'm guessing folks not experienced at building projects like these might struggle with the assembly on a couple of the projects but both of these are very minor issues, hence deciding to go with five stars instead of four. All in all a great collection of fun projects that, more importantly, leave you with a great cookbook of code and examples that can easily be expanded on with personal experimentation. Highly recommended if you are looking for fun projects to build with Arduino.

Amazon.com Review
Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling's spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart--such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review--to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling's fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry--bring plenty of tissues.

The heart of Book 7 is a hero's mission--not just in Harry's quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man--and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you-know-who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore's warning about making the choice between "what is right and what is easy," and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you-know-who, it is a testament to Rowling's skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix's flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience. --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition." Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I’m sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." --J.K. Rowling

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing--she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Potter fans, relax—this review packs no spoilers. Instead, we're taking advantage of our public platform to praise Rowling for the excellence of her plotting. We can't think of anyone else who has sustained such an intricate, endlessly inventive plot over seven thick volumes and so constantly surprised us with twists, well-laid traps and Purloined Letter-style tricks. Hallows continues the tradition, both with sly feats of legerdemain and with several altogether new, unexpected elements. Perhaps some of the surprises in Hallows don't have quite the punch as those of earlier books, but that may be because of the thoroughness and consistency with which Rowling has created her magical universe, and because we've so raptly absorbed its rules.

We're also seizing the occasion to wish out loud that her editors had done their jobs more actively. It's hard to escape the notion that the first three volumes were more carefully edited than the last four. Hallows doesn't contain the extraneous scenes found in, say, Goblet of Fire, but the momentum is uneven. Rowling is much better at comedy than at fight scenes, and no reader of the sixth book will be startled to hear that Hallows has little humor or that its characters engage in more than a few fights. Surely her editors could have helped her find other methods of building suspense besides the use of ellipses and dashes? And craft fight dialogue that sounds a bit less like it belongs in a comic book? Okay, we're quibbling. We know these minor nuisances won't dent readers' enjoyment, at least not this generation of readers; we couldn't put Hallows down ourselves. But we believe Rowling, and future readers, deserved even better. Ages 9-12. (July)

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up—In this concluding volume, Rowling brings together the themes and characters familiar to her readers, providing thrills both expected and unexpected. Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out on the mission left to Harry by Albus Dumbledore, to search for the remaining Horcruxes, the hidden pieces of Voldemort's soul that must be destroyed to ensure his final defeat. Harry and his friends find themselves fugitives, but help comes from unexpected quarters and old friends. Harry is also searching for the truth about Dumbledore's life, as he tries to reconcile rumors about the man's past with the heroic headmaster he thought he knew. The legend of the Deathly Hallows, three magical objects that have the power to overcome death, proves to be related to Dumbledore's past as well as the present conflict. While the plot wanders somewhat on its way there, the final battle with Voldemort, involving a full range of friends and foes, is Rowling at her finest. The headstrong plot involves clues and characters from all of the volumes, building on details and tying up loose ends. An underlying message about the power of truth and redemption is reflected in a range of characters, combining with mythic allusions to give depth to the series as a whole. Hallows continues the darker tone of Half-Blood Prince, and there's no Quidditch to be found here, though there are comic moments. Fans of the series will devour this lengthy tome and will be left hoping for more tales from this fully fleshed out fantastic world.—Beth L. Meister, Pleasant View Elementary School, Franklin, WI

Easily the most complex, and in some ways most satisfying, of all the Potter novels
By Mike London
ORDER OF THE PHOENIX could well be my favorite book of them all, if Azkaban and Deathly Hallows weren't as good as they were. For all the talk about GOBLET being the one where Rowling really hikes up the intensity and the complexity in the series, it is here, in PHOENIX, she gives us Potter's darkest, and most complex, adventure of all.

The second most complex novel in the entire Potter sequence (the first being Book 7), this book is probably the second best one, though I still like Azkaban better. This novel introduces the Order of the Phoenix, a whole litany of new characters and a more indepth look at the Ministry For Magic.

Potter has been having bad dreams about a locked door. So he must find out what to do about that. While at home with the Dursleys, he and Dudley are attacked by dementors, and so he stands trial before the Ministry for the inappropriate use of underage magic. He ultimately must appear before the Ministry, and it is only by Dumbledore's appearance he is saved.

But the Ministry is not finished yet. Still under staunch denial that Voldemort is back, Cornelius Fudge sends a new teacher, Dolores Umbridge, to bring Hogwarts under the Ministry's control. Much of the storyline revolves around Umbridge as she takes over Hogwarts, eventually ousting Dumbledore, who goes on the run. Her end is very well justified.

I remember when I read the book back in 2003 when it initially came out being rather disappointed. I wasn't a big fan of GOBLET, and I couldn't way to spend more time in Harry's universe, being back at Hogwarts with characters I know and love. But when I read PHOENIX, though, I felt even more lost and rather alienated. Hogwarts was being taken over. Hagrid was missing for half the book. Dumbledore is extremely distant (for reasons explained at the end of the novel). The Ministry is taken over, and it's run by a man who doesn't know what the hell is going on. There was a lot going on in this novel, and it was all rather depressing. Harry became angry and had severe mood swings, and was always snapping at the people around him. On the positive note he did get some romance, but ultimately even that frizzled out. Harry even had to take "Defense Against the Dark Arts" underground, as Umbridge refuses to even acknowledge Voldemort at all, as per Ministry order.

When I reread it in 2007 in prepration for DEATHLY HALLOWS, my stocks in this book absolutely soared. This is a dark, dark book, and while I still felt rather alienated and cut off from Rowling's magical world and the Ministry Interference, this time around I realised how masterfully crafted this novel truly is.

ORDER, as far as I'm concerned, is where Rowling truly stopped writing children's fiction, but crafting a dark, bitter book about dark, bitter times in her character's lives. Reading ORDER, and especially about Umbridge, keeps reminding one of Orwell and his horrific visions in 1984 and ANIMAL FARM.

Umbridge is easily one of her best characters she ever wrote, and one of the most despicable characters in all of fiction. It is people like Umbridge that brought Hitler to power in the early 1930s, and who would enable him to commit the many atrocities that he did during WWII (and I thought that for a long time before HALLOWS came out, in which Umbridge has turned into a type of Nazi who fully subscribes to Voldemort's racial genocide).

It is here, with ORDER, in which Rowling shows us the evil of bureaucracy, of how Voldemort isn't the only person in which massive evil lurks.

I also love how Rowling greatly expands her environment from the previous novels. We see for the first time St. Mungo's (and have a rather morose encounter with Gilderoy Lockheart from Book 2). We get to go inside the Ministry For Magic, and a very impressive place it is. Grimmauld Place, along with Sirius, is also very entertaining.

And we get some great new characters. Thestrals. The beautifully bizaare Luna Lovegood. Gwarp. Kingsley Shacklebolt. And a personal favorite, Nymphadora Tonks.

The series also has one of my favorite scenes in all of literature: when Dumbledore brings Firenze on during the rainstorm as the new divination teacher (a scene I was so disappointed they cut on the movie. The seeds were they but they cut it damn it.).

The climax of the book is great, with Dumbledore's Army truly coming into their own as they fight against the Death Eaters, who are trying to take the Prophecy from the Hall of Prophecy in the Ministry For Magic. I love that whole end sequence. And the death Rowling includes is just brutal, not really how she kills off the character but the fact she killed him off at all. Interestingly enough, Arthur Weasly, who survives an attack in this novel, was originally slated to die, but Rowling could not bear to kill him off. He was also supposed to die in Book 7, but she couldn't kill him then either, and he was the only real normal fatherfigure in the series, and a good father at that.

And naturally, we get to learn some vastly important information about Neville Longbottom. Following the trend of other installments in the series in regards to introducing apparently non-essential characters and information,, he turns out to much more important than you would suppose. We also begin to learn Dumbledore isn't as flawless as you would like to think.

Another thing I really like about the book is you really do feel like the stakes are really high, which you should as we're only two books away from the end. In fact, HALF-BLOOD PRINCE seemed almost a step back in terms of complexity and highs takes atmosphere from this one.

One thing that should be noted is this is a real doorstop of a book. At a quarter of a million worlds (half as long as Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS), this is easily one of the longest children's books ever published. Rowling has even said she wish she could go back and edit this book down, as she feels it is too long. But what would she cut? Great stuff, but very long for kids. Speaks to the amazing appeal these books have that children have read something as long as this.

Overall, one of my favorite Potter books. I think it's even better than AZKABAN on a literary level, but I still prefer Azkaban to this as a personal preference. Still, this is one of Potter's best. Don't go in thinking you'll have as much fun at Hogwarts. These are dark times, and the war really is beginning.

We can only hope Potter and his friends will pull through.

A stunning and thoroughly satisfying conclusion
By J.A.
This is arguably the most "hyped" book in history, and if J.K. Rowling had to sneak down to the kitchen for a glass of red wine to calm her nerves while writing The Goblet of Fire (as she said she did), one wonders what assuaged her while writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The collective breath of tens of millions of readers has been held for two years...and now...was it worth the wait? Did Ms. Rowling live up to the hype? (For that, amongst hundreds of questions, is really the only question that matters.)

The answer, most assuredly, is YES.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is told in a strikingly different style than the previous six books - even different from The Half Blood Prince, and, I daresay, it's a better written, better edited, tighter narrative. And while the action is lively and well paced throughout, Rowling found a way to answer most of our questions while introducing new and complex ideas. What fascinated me was this: Some people were right, with regard to who is good, who is bad, who will live, who will die - but almost nobody got the "why" part correct. I truthfully expected an exciting but rather predictable ending, but instead was thrown for a loop. We've known that Rowling is fiendishly clever for years - but I didn't think she was *this* clever.

Not since turning the final page of The Return of the King twenty-eight years ago have I felt such a keen sense of loss. My love affair (indeed, everyone's love affair, I imagine) with all things Harry began somewhere in the first three chapters of The Sorcerer's Stone, and has lasted, on this side of the Atlantic, three months shy of nine years. For all that time we have waited and wondered - was Dumbledore right to trust Snape? Will Ron and Hermione get together? What's to become of Ginny and Harry? What really happened on that tower, when Dumbledore was blasted backwards, that "blast" atypical of the Avada Kedavra curse as we've seen it when used throughout the series. So many more questions than those listed here, and so many devilishly well-hidden hints. The answers, as I hinted above, will shock and awe you.

When first we met Harry Potter, he was "The Boy Who Lived", with an address of "The Cupboard Under the Stairs". Who could help but bleed sympathy for Harry, treated abysmally - abused, really - by the only blood relatives he had, and forced to live under said stairs by those awful Muggles, the Dursleys? It was a sensationally brilliant introduction, one that ensured that our heartstrings would be plucked and enchanted to sing. He was The Boy Who Lived.

Since reading that first book, we have enjoyed Rowling's spry sense of humor - portraits that spoke, stairways that moved at any given moment, Hagrid jinxing Dudley so that a pigs tail grew from his behind, Fred and George's fantastic creations, etc, etc., etc., and more etc's. There was a sense of wonder and magic in Rowling's writing, so thoroughly captivating that the recommended age group of 9-12 in no way resembled the book's actual audience. It was common to see adults walking about with hardcover copies of the latest book, sans dust jacket (to hide the fact that they were reading a "kids" book, I suppose). It was also common to hear of eight year olds sitting down with a seven-hundred-plus page book! By themselves! If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it.

As for Harry, we admired him. He wasn't afraid to stand up for what he felt was right, even if he found himself in detention for it. He was brutally honest, and immensely courageous and loyal. Harry came to embody, at times, who we would like to be. He wasn't perfect, of course. He suspected Snape of being the one who was after the Sorcerer's Stone, and in The Chamber of Secrets, he thought that Malfoy was the heir of Slytherin. This didn't diminish Harry in our eyes - it made him more human, more real, and even, perhaps, more enviable.

Endless fan sites have been erected. For an adult to go to any of them, and find that thirteen year olds are having an easier time parsing out the books plots, subplots, and mysteries, was (for me at least) humbling, but yet also a testament to Rowling herself, and her remarkable creation. She encouraged an entire generation of young readers to read and to think for themselves.

But the time has come to say good-bye, for this is truly the end.

So good-bye, Harry. Good-bye Hermione, Ron, Professor Dumbledore, *Professor* Snape, Professor McGonagall, Professor Hagrid, Ginny, Fred, George, Neville, Dobby (and all the house elves), even Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. We will miss all of you, every character we encountered, from Muggle to Mudblood to hippogriff and owl, and everything about the world you all so vibrantly inhabit. And to Ms. Rowling: know that you have brought immeasurable joy to millions and millions of Muggles worldwide, and know that we cannot possibly thank you enough. What a tremendous gift you were given. Thank you for sharing it with us.

A Life is More Than a Moment: The Desegregation of Little Rock's Central High, by Will Campbell, Ernest Dumas, Robert S. McCord

These are the stunning photographs that shocked the conscience of the nation in 1957. President Dwight Eisenhower was so moved at the beating of veteran Alex Wilson that he ordered 1,200 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne to Little Rock, and he federalized the Arkansas National Guard to quell the "disgraceful occurrences." But how did it happen? Little Rock seemed an unlikely place for such violent hatred; it did not even see itself as part of the deep south and had voluntarily decided to integrate the schools. Essays by Bob McCord, Ernie Dumas, and Will Campbell chart the path leading to the crisis, as well as the impact of the crisis on the civil rights movement.Young Will Counts had only been with The Arkansas Democrat for about 3 months on that fateful Labor Day in 1957. Recently graduated from the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism at Indiana University he had been pleased to get a job with his own hometown newspaper, though he didn't expect to see much action. Little Rock, after all, was not a very large city, and didn't offer much opportunity to capture "the essential image," that elusive photographic ideal that distills an entire story into one magical image. And he knew that his preference for a small 35mm camera rather than the larger "news" cameras then in vogue meant his pictures would have to compete with those larger negatives preferred by editors everywhere. All in all, he was not expecting much from his first job. Governor Orval Faubus' surprise decision to surround Central High with Arkansas National Guard troops and prevent 9 black students from entering changed everything. The prospect of covering a major civil rights story in his own hometown was exhilarating. He headed for the school armed with a "blend-in" flannel shirt and his beloved 35mm camera. Three "Life Magazine" staffers: Francis Miller, Grey Villette, and Paul Welch found that their large cameras (and their coats and ties!) quickly identified them as outsiders. They were attacked by the mob (and adding insult to injury) arrested by the police. Will was able to move freely through the crowds and was accepted everywhere as a native son. Many feel that his photographs captured the essence of those dark days and he was unanimously recommended for the Pulitzer Prize by the photography committee that year." A Life is More Than a Moment" carries us back to those painful and turbulent times, but it does not leave us there. For more than 30 years these photos served as the foundation for Will's photo journalism courses at Indiana University. Goaded by the claims of a student that Central High was not better off for his efforts in 1957 Will decided to return to Little Rock and see for himself what impact, if any, the photos had. He returned to Central High to take a new series of photos and managed to find many the most important people in his original photographs. Much has happened to them in 40 years and Will, the consummate storyteller, gives voice to their lives. This is a book that does show some of the most ugly hatred in life, but in the end, it is also a book of hope and reconciliation.

From Library Journal
The world has often heard about the desegregation crisis at Little Rock Central High School in 1957-58, and many have wondered how such a conflict could have exploded in that small Southern city, which heretofore had been noted for moderation. The author reveals that only five days after the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown decision, the Little Rock School Board announced it would end the segregated school system. Within a year, the board adopted a plan to integrate in stages. Photographer and author Counts, who had just started working as a photographer for the Arkansas Democrat, one of the town's two dailies, presents here his recollectionsAand photographsAof the event that put Little Rock on the map in the worst light. In this spare and accurate account, he makes a case for why the tragedy might never have occurred were it not for a governor, Orval Faubus, determined to resuscitate a flagging career by playing the race card to the hilt. Counts relates Faubus's refusal to allow black students to enter Central High until President Eisenhower sent in troops to enforce integration; the next year, Faubus closed all the high schools for a year until a court order forced them to reopen. This probing recollection is almost a primer of how one man disrupted a community for years to come. From Booklist
As a new photographer with the Arkansas Democrat, Counts was sent to cover the desegregation of his alma mater, Central High School in Little Rock, in 1957. His ties to the town and to the school helped him blend in and take stunning photos of the social upheaval that resulted when the nine enrolling black students faced virulent resistance by most white citizens, including the governor, Orval Faubus. The text includes interviews with some of the black students integrating the school, including Elizabeth Eckford, a black girl tormented by the mob. Among the essays is one by Hazel Bryan, who was captured by Counts' camera jeering Eckford in a photo that portrayed Bryan in that moment as the "poster child of the hate generation." Counts also photographed the fortieth anniversary commemoration of the race crisis in Little Rock. This book is a powerful and moving reminder of a painful time in U.S. history and the lingering legacy of racism. Vanessa Bush

From Kirkus Reviews
Photographer Counts took one of the defining images of the civil rights movement: Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine black students chosen to integrate Little Rock, Ark.s Central High School in 1957, being taunted by a white female student. Counts returned to Central High 40 years later and with images from the late '50s he juxtaposes those from the late '90s: Eckford and her former tormenter, Hazel Bryan Massery, chatting amiably in front of the school building, black and white cheerleaders joining together at a basketball game, a popular black teacher leading an integrated class in trigonometry, black and white students graduating together in cap and gown. Accompanying essays recount the events so graphically illustrated in Countss photographs and put that fall day in 1957 in historical context. A hopeful reminider of how far weve come in four short decades. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Great summary and big picture view
By S. Sells
This book is a thoughtful summary of the events of the 1957 Central High Crisis, especially for those who don't have the time or inclination to delve into the details but want to know all about the history behind the crisis and the events at that time. What makes the book even more interesting is that the authors take you inside Central High School forty years later so that the reader can see the life and times of a academically successful and fully integrated CHS today. Of course, one of the greatest contributions are the photographs by the late Will Counts -- awarding winning photography that carries you back in time. I highly recommend the book for students over age 12 and anyone who desires an accurate account of this shameful yet historic civil rights event.

Dramatic Pictures, and hope for the future
By Alan Mills
Little Rock was the first time since reconstruction that federal troops had been mobilized top protect Blacks seeking to exercise the rights they allegedly won in the aftermath of the Civil War. The terror, hatred, and brutality of the times is searingly captured by the iconic photo which gives the book its title--of a young white student screaming, her face contorted, at an equally young black girl. Equally appalling is the other major picture which forms the center of this work--a series showing the mob attacking a black reporter, and beating him with no one willing to intervene.
While the book would be worthwhile for the pictures alone, it is all the more compelling by bringing the story up to date. Centered around the fortieth anniversary of desegregation of Little Rock High School, the author tracks down both the black student and the white student spewing hatred. There are pictures of them together, having gone through a process of healing and reconciliation.
The ultimate question--why such hatred--is not answered, nor could it be, given the format and limitations of what is, af4er all, basically a book of narrated pictures. But the question is certainly raised and explored.
This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone who loves photography or wants to understand why the Civil rights movement was so important to the history of this country (although I would strongly urge that no one take the advice f the other reviewer, and use this as the primary source for information on this struggle).
My only criticism is that the upbeat tone of this volume needs to be questioned. As James Meridith has said--If a black man can be kicked ten times in open view, and has no redress, is it really "improvement" if he is only kicked nine times, but still has no redress? Is Little Rock really free of prejudice and discrimination? Is America?

Dropped Back in Time---1957
By Cassie Cox
I purchased this book to accompanying the book my high school classes are currently reading, "Warriors Don't Cry." As a high school teacher, I realize that students are likely to more fully engage with a novel when they feel they can truly relate to the story and when they are able to imagine all that is happening. "A Life is More Than a Moment" makes this possible! As we read the novel, I share pictures from this text with my students. They love this book. Often they ask to read this book even on their own, excitedly reporting their newfound knowledge with their classmates. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is intersted in seeing the real thing.

The existence of God has long fascinated the human species. Based on a system of belief and several historical encounters with God, people have built their religions. Whenever something bizarre bothers someone, and that someone takes refuge in divine guidance, hardcore religious preachers give only one absurd answer : “God works in a mysterious way”. But has this so called God ever been experienced by any mortal being, or was it all very biological! In the book the author takes us to the scientific land of investigation where we shall explore the true biological foundation of God and religious beliefs. In this fascinating journey of neuroscience we shall discover how exactly we humans constructed God and not the other way around.

Not scientific.
By Sabrina
This book has terrible Grammer and there is no source material provided. The author would benefit from an editor as using the slang conjunction "kinda" does not belong in the text of a book that is supposed to be about science. The sentence structure is bad and with no source material you are just expected to take the authors word that what he is saying is true. There are much better books of this variety available from reputable sources that use appropriate citation.

If you are looking for a source for a academic research paper this is not it as it is at best an opinion piece.

Interesting ideas poorly presented
By Hans Maverick
"The God Parasite" presents a whole host of ideas explaining,or at least purporting to explain, why religion is so universal among humans. Many of these are tired old canards often rehashed by non-believers who want to write theists off as simply ignorant or cowardly, e.g., "There were so many natural phenomena taking place all around the [sic] primitive man, which he couldn't explain. . . . Hence came fear." Toward the end of the book, Mr. Naskar redeems himself somewhat by presenting an overview of neuroscience that explains a host of allegedly spiritual phenomena such as out-of-body experiences, but the work of other writers like Andy Thomson and Pascal Boyer present much more coherent and credible explanations of the neuroscience and anthropology that drive religion. Finally, this book's stilted prose and poor use of references render it nearly useless.

Summing up, buy this book only if you find it in the bargain bin at your local used bookstore.

Review

"Written with tempered passion, Sharlene Swartz s award winning research heralds a powerful new voice, one who can clarify the ambiguity and ambivalence of moral development under difficult conditions" - Professor Robert L. Selman, Harvard University

"An important, deeply moving study of the moral thinking and behavior of young black people in a South African township. This book is reported with affection and critical analysis. It should be useful for educators everywhere who work with populations that have suffered discrimination and exploitation." - Professor Nel Noddings, author of Critical Lessons: What Our Schools Should Teach.

"Sharlene Swartz has given us a stunning, prize-winning account of the morality of township youth. The brilliance of her ethnography brings to life young people s struggle to define right and wrong so as to survive in an unjust violent world. This book marks a definitive shift in sociological studies of youth and the field of moral education by demonstrating the power of empirical research into moral formations." - Professor Madeleine Arnot, University of Cambridge, UK.

"Dr. Swartz has pulled together what is arguably the most interesting work in moral psychology that I have seen in many years . . . Its readability and interest will extend beyond the narrow confines of the academy. This is an impressive bit of scholarship, in the best ethnographic tradition. It is exceedingly well-written, and I am confident that it will make a splash in moral development and education." - Professor Dan Lapsley, University of Notre Dame

"Numerous researchers have in recent years called for studies of moral reasoning in context, but few of them have bothered to get inside cultures so as to uncover how they orient thinking and come to define those dimensions of morality that count in their lives. I imagine that this book would be used in a variety of courses from psychology departments to schools of education to departments of social work and sociology. I recall how Willis's description of working class youth in the UK became a well used text or how Rogoff's studies became must readings in courses on development... I think the potential to match these other works is real." - Professor James Youniss, Catholic University of America

"Rich and nuanced, Swartz s work paints masterfully the incredible resilience of humanity. Swartz coins some new terms moral capital and moral ecology that, along with her moral sociology, will enter the discourse on moral development and education, shaping dialogue among researchers, theorists and educators for years to come." - Dr Darcia Narvaez, University of Notre Dame

"At last, an up-to-the minute book on youth from a non Western perspective. Moral ecology makes a richly welcome contribution to the literature and a must-read foryouth scholars, policy makers and all those interested inunderstanding young lives. Based onan ethnographic study of youthin post conflict South Africa, this is a fresh, original andthoroughly rewarding read." - Dr Mary Jane Kehily, The Open University, UK

"Moral ecology is an innovative development in social scientific research, not only because it places the morality of youth at the heart of social scientific analysis, but also because it demonstrates the importance of putting the moral fibre of all societies under the social scientific microscope. The book is interesting and insightful, academically and socially, personally and politically. It challenges many of the reigning orthodoxies in the field of moral education, while simultaneously extending the boundaries of social scientific research to incorporate the normative. The book should be read by all of those with a sociological and educational imagination, within and without South Africa." - Professor Kathleen Lynch, Chair of Equality Studies, University College Dublin

"This kind of work is so important amidst such disparaging stereotypes/images about poor, urban youth around the globe - as threats to civil society rather than assets to the future. I can easily see the book used in courses of youth culture and development; in qualitative methodology courses; and in teacher education... Great work Sharlene. Bravo!" - Professor Wendy Lutrell - Harvard University Graduate School of Education

Our Study Guide for the MLT Test Is Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the MLT test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the MLT test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game so you can become a Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the MLT test is written by our MLT test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the MLT test. Our original research into the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification Examination, offered by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the MLT test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the MLT test.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the MLT test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the MLT test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the MLT test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the MLT test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the MLT test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the MLT test...

The Exclusive Test Taking Techniques

  • Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about them
  • Get quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.
  • Details the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the MLT test that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activities
  • Our researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.
  • A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master the toughest problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantage
  • Learn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. Many test takers use exactly the wrong strategy, but you can avoid the pitfalls with the help of our standardized test experts
  • Includes instructions detailing the best way for you to get started with your preparation efforts so you can begin the path of improving your scores immediately
  • The most efficient and accurate method for picking the right answer every time- You won't be scratching your head trying to read the mind of the test question writer, but will instead know exactly what to look for to pick the best answer
  • Courteous, unlimited customer service is 100% free- if you need the product emailed to a different address, lose the product, or have any other difficulty- the help you need is just a short email away and our representatives are active 7 days a week helping customers
  • The research of our team of test experts is 100% independent and original
  • Our exclusive "calibration strategy" to help you never go too fast OR too slow when answering even the toughest questions
  • The 5-step process we've developed, what we call the "phased" approach, concerning the use of the various study aids and practice tests
  • How the problem of procrastination can kill your chance of success, and the most important thing you can do about it
  • How to know when you've studied as much as you need to for the exam- and the reason why we think some people should spend LESS time studying for the test
  • The Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hard
  • How to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers
  • Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writers
  • Our "benchmark" method for deciding which of the answer choices you should pick
  • How some of the random bits of information in a question often "give away" the right answer choice
  • How to "milk the question" for clues to the right answer even if you have no idea what the question is asking about
  • How to avoid panicking when you don't know the answer to a question- we offer a systematic method that will serve as the "lifeline" you need to minimize the time wasted on the test questions that leave you stumped --
  • What to do about the tough questions that you have no clue how to answer- don't just give up, use the advice we offer to make sure you give yourself the best chance of getting the right answer

  • How to use our brainstorming method to get "inside the question" and reveal the hard-to-find clues and some of the subtle things you didn't realize you knew
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.

I purchased the Secrets file, and I just wanted to let you know that I passed my test. I just want to thank you again, and hope you have continued success in your ventures. Sincerely, Paul L.

My name is Chris. I used the Secrets study guide for five days. The study guide made the test so easy to understand. Like you said this program is worth 100's of dollars. To me 1,000's!! THANKS, Chris G.

I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I had ZERO preparation! I was nervous about the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Brian

I heard about your website from a friend. I am enrolled in a review course, and in hindsight, I wish I wouldn't have taken my review course and instead spent a fraction of the money on your program. Thank you! Zac L.

You get at least 10 times your money's worth! --When you consider what's at stake with the exam, we believe the value of our study guide gives you at least ten times your money's worth.

Not worth it

This is more of study hints on how to take a test with educated guesses. I wanted actual content that would help me review for the registry. It had some but barely any. Save your money.

When time is of the essence you should probably get yourself a resource book that condenses down the main points. And this particular guide is the one that can do that for you. It’s written by test experts who spell it all out clearly for you. It’s like having your own personal coach walk you through the materials. And best of all, you can test yourself with the practice questions so that you will feel more confident going into the exam. All the way around, you really can’t lose with this book!
