Title should be "... for NEWS Writers and Editors"

With a different title I would have given this book five stars, and I would highly recommend it for newsrooms.

But the majority of the world's writers and editors do not work in newsrooms. They do not write news articles. They write web pages or annual reports for corporations or books on software or educational materials or white papers on technical topics or corporate policy statements or publicity pieces -- or a thousand other kinds of writing, often with audiences just as large as a newspaper's circulation.

The problem with this book, in other words, is not the quality of its entries, but their selection. The book has lots of help for accurate spelling of proper names, but surprisingly little help with topics that today are either ubiquitous or ubiquitous for large swaths of society.

Under "E," for example, you will find an entry for "Elliot, Denholm" with the correct spelling of that actor's name. But you won't find an entry on "email" discussing whether the preferred spelling is hyphenated ("e-mail"). Nor will you find any guidance on "e-commerce" (or eCommerce or E-commerce or any of a number of other variants). You will (thank goodness?) find the correct spelling of "Edgware Road," the London street and Underground station.

Under "H" you will find the correct spellings of Harper's Bazaar, Harpers Ferry, Harper's Magazine and Hartsfield-Jackson (note the hyphen!) Atlanta International Airport. What you won't find is any discussion of the compound "health care" and whether it should ever be written as a solid (as in "universal healthcare").

Also under "H" you will find the correct spellings of Hindu Kush (the Afghan mountain range), Hippocrates (ancient Greek physician), and Al Hirschfield (the American caricaturist). But you won't find a reminder that the correct acronym for the landmark 1996 legislation (provisions of which affect every U.S. hospital, medical facility, health plan, and pharmaceutical company) is HIPAA, not HIPPA (which is how it's pronounced), because the full name of that legislation is the "Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act."

Bottom line: This is not a bad book; it's just a book primarily for newspeople. It should have been promoted as such.

The two stars (rather than none) is for the fact that there are lots of entries that are actually useful (equable vs. equitable; precipitant, precipitate, and precipitous; stanch vs. staunch), and for the most part they are very clearly written. And when an entry calls for advice -- see, for example, the entry on "hopefully" -- Bryson's taste and judgment are sound.

If you're a fan of Bill Bryson's wit and humor, then you might be disappointed. This is a reference book. And it's a good one. Which, to me, means it's useful, and in this case, dry is good.

But if I have to read reference book, I want it to be written by Bill Bryson. Bryson is a master writer. This book reflects that.

A very useful guide for a cornerstone certification

The last time I took the Java Programmer's Certification was for Java 1.4. Autoboxing didn't exist yet, everybody was still using StringBuffers, and the certification was administered by Sun, not Oracle. 12 years later, I have a ton of practical Java experience, but I felt like it was time for a refresher course. Libraries and APIs are easy to look up on the fly (thanks Google!) and therefore not as important to memorize. However language fundamentals absolutely must be ingrained into the professional Java developer's mind.

This study guide reminded me very much of the guide I used for the 1.4 test (a guide that I was very happy with, but forget the name of.) This Java SE 8 guide focuses on the language fundamentals required by the certification, providing well-reasoned examples and very useful sample questions. The writing is very straight-forward and easy to understand.

I believe all Java developers should take this certification--not because the Programmer 1 certification itself is critical, but because:

1) the higher level certifications _are_ useful and this one is a prerequisite, and
2) knowing the basics of the Java language is what separates the so-so developers from the great developers.

Good cert book, good general Java book

I've been reading the OCA Java 8 book both as a general refresher on Java and in preparation for the exam. I really like this book; here is why:
1) Concise yet readable style. Complicated concepts are explained simply and intuitively, obscure edge cases pointed out as such, and, well, it's fun to read, which matters in a certification book (the genre normally tends to double as non-medical sleeping aid).
2) The book started with a self assessment. I've been programming Java since 2002, and this was a humbling experience -- I proceeded to get half of the questions wrong. Ego issues aside, this was great because it made me pay more attention to the sections that I knew I did not get right.
3) Portability. The pages are mercifully thin, the book is a paperback -- I can actually carry it around. I've lifted the old Java6 SCJP book (effectively a nerdy coffee table book, precisely 2 inches thick and printed on heavy stock), so I would say that making a portable cert book is an accomplishment. Granted, it helps that the exam got split up into 2 parts -- there is a lot less to cover for OCA. Still, this book feels to be less than a quarter of the McGraw-Hill SCJP tome weight.
4) Examples. Lots and lots of examples. The best way to find out that you don't understand something is to trace an example and go, "what? no, that's not what should happen", and then read the section the second time and realize that yes, that's exactly what should happen.
5) Detailed explanations of self-assessment questions. This book does not just tell you "the answer was A, B and F", it tells you why all the other answers were wrong, in excellent detail.

Overall, I am very pleased with the book. It says very early on that it's not meant to be a beginning Java book, but I don't see why not. It's readable enough to be a first book, and it includes enough obscure Java features that it's still interesting for an experienced programmer.

Edited: I've since passed the test, and in my opinion, the best way to study is this:
1) Read the book, do exercises at the end of each chapter and make sure to understand which ones you got wrong and why.
2) Do all exercises again within two weeks of the test; it's great review, and, hopefully, you should no longer have many incorrect answers. But again, make sure you know which ones are wrong and why.
3) Read chapter summaries the day before (I did that on the train, but the day before would have been ideal).

The test was actually easier than book exercises, but I consider that a good thing on part of the book authors.

Honestly it's not a bad book, but be forewarned that there are examples and information that are incorrect. I would normally have given it four stars, but I expected higher quality from a book that is here to help you have a certain baseline of training.

'Book design as a school of thought' was originally delivered (in German) as a lecture and published as a pamphlet, in 1991. This is its first publication in English. 'Designing books' was published as a separate booklet by Agfa (Wilmington, Mass.) in 1989, in German. Translation into several other languages followed, including an English edition (1990): all long out of print. The version published here has been revised and considerably augmented with new illustrations. The third part, 'Books designed by Jost Hochuli', is completely new. Here Robin Kinross comments on 27 of Hochuli's works. Both authors are internationally known, Kinross more as critic and historian, Hochuli above all as a practitioner. In this book they offer a serious introduction to book design, free of ideological dogma. Short and concise, it contains a rich, painstakingly selected fund of illustrations.

Dogma/No Dogma, is still Dogma (but this is post post modernisn, so who cares?)

Regardless of what the authors write about, whether symmetrical or asymmetrical design should be used and when, it is, in my opinion, complete and with illustrations. This book was, I believe, to give courage and to inspire the book designer, to introduce a new idea (that the spine is the central axis and not the page itself) and to ask the reader(s) to contemplate. I do find the cover lovely as both symmetry and asymmetry is used to show that both work together and in contrast.

A Picturebook of Typography / Design

As indicated by the review above, the book is divided up into three sections that tackle the history, methods, and styles of book design. The title, "Designing Books," may sound like a technical reference, but it's not. The book should have been named "Book Designs," for it is more a picturebook of illustrations and typography from books of poetry, novels, brochures, art books, and other publications.
The author does cover Swiss grid design, proportions of text areas and margins, and the differences between asymmetrical and symmetrical design theories. It is perhaps this historical reference of asymmetrical and symmetrical styles that make this book worth having. It presents intelligent comparisons of both theories, the history behind each movement, and the cultural stereotypes attached to each. Case in point, Jan Tschichold's groundbreaking work in asymmetrical design / book layout, before totally reversing course and becoming one of the great symmetrical designers in his later years.
The author intelligently illustrates the positive and negative aspects of both design theories, without leaning towards either as a preference. The author finds beauty and intrigue in both styles.
To clarify however, the "asymmetrical" theories illustrated here are based on 1960s Swiss/German grid layouts using lots of Univers and white space. This is not a collection of cutting-edge typography or radical design work. The illustrated examples are clean, modest and classic.
A good starting point for those who need a clear entry point into this field, but by no means a reference manual for the experienced.

i ordered this item despite the negative-recommendation written by other users assuming that i will get the item no matter what. i requested it one month before the exam day, but 5 days left & still i didn't get the item neither an update from the seller! so i contacted the seller where he advised that it is a tracking-system-issue & will be solved within a week or so! which means, exam is already over!

so i asked for refund & recall the item back ... two days later i got the refund!

i hoped the processing speed for sending the item was as much as refuning itself!
