A book that should have been much better

Storaro always got the finest looking prints and lab work,
and his films are stunning ,But the reproductions in this book
look like as bad as the video for "1900",They are printed on
nice paper in a nice hardcover,but the source for these images
is pretty poor,
I would love to see what a 4000 line scanned capture from
the original source would look like printed the same way.
But that would mean getting Studios like Paramount involved,
Which might mean that the book never came out.Since they
can't even be trusted to release his best work on dvd.
It seems odd that Storaro who seems to demand such high Quality
from his labs,would Ok such poor reprints of his films.
Still with so many of his films unavailable on dvd,This Book
is still worth getting.

This book solidly refutes the widely disseminated arguement that al-Qaeda is a medieval, tribal organization. Gray is spot-on in his assessment. There are few organizations - violent or not - as modern as al-Qaeda. John Arquilla's and David Ronfeldt's works on networks support this.
For people trying to understand the threat to the US, percieving our adversaries as 'in the stone age' isn't going to get us very far.
This book was money well spent.

Modern horrors

Is the title of this book misleading? Clearly the emphasis of the book is on 'what it means to be modern' and 'Al Qaeda' is only used sparingly (but in my opinion very tellingly) to illustrate the main thesis. Thats not to say the title wont shift more copies with Al Qaeda in there, but if you're an intelligent and open-minded reader then you should come away from this book having been presented with a novel perspective on the modern world and having learnt something new, or at least a new argument, about the underlying nature and rational of a truly modern and global terrorist movement. Gray spends a lot of time arguing that Islamism is a product of a way of thinking that did not exist pre-enlightenment, and it seems most reviewers are focusing on this part of the argument. But to me, the more interesting (and convincing) arguments here concern al qaeda's existance as a product not only of modern thinking but of globalisation ie their ability to exploit failed states, global communications such as the internet, and of the international movement of people, money and arms. Thus the meaning of al qaeda is placed within the framework of the world view presented in 'straw dogs' - rather than technology and globablisation marching the world forwards into an era of democracy and peace, they will simply continue history along its usual course of conflict and suffering, only yet more bloodily

CHARLOTTE TAKES LONDON BY STORM

Charlotte Winchester decides to leave America and take a ship to London to visit her brother, Lord Thomas Winchester and his wife, Lady Katherine. London isn't really ready for the likes of Charlotte and her bold outspoken ways. Better yet, Thomas and Katherine have gone to America for a visit. Lord Lucas Tanner, widower, is staying at the Winchester home after his residence has burnt down. What a shock to his Lordship to deal with the crass Miss Winchester. He finds himself taking this hoyden over his knee because she dares him, but it won't be the last time either. I laughed out loud so many times reading this humorous story. London won't be the same with Charlotte in country! This story has a plot and dialogue that is witty and entertaining.

Short, sweet and sassy!

This was definitely a short story, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good one!! I just LOVED the two main characters: Charlotte and Lucas! They really had sparks flying from the very beginning! Charlotte was every bit the sassy demanding runaway sister from America, and Lucas was the well-mannered English Gentleman. That is until she pretty much dares him to spank her! Laugh out loud funny and very sweet!!

This is the next book about the Winchesters. Charlotte is Lord Thomas’s sister and she decides to cross the ocean by herself without telling anyone. When she arrives, she finds out the Thomas and Katherine have left to visit America. But, staying at their home is Lord Lucas Tanner. He grates on Charlotte’s nerves and she decides to act like the uneducated savage that she thinks Lucas feels she is. Of course, Lucas doesn’t allow he to get away with it and Charlotte has a sore bottom to contend with. They continue to match their wits together, with Charlotte coming out with the short end of the stick. I really enjoyed this story. My only complaint is that the book wasn’t longer. I give this 5 stars.

Excellent, well explained book.

I love, love, love this book, not only Joe Cartwright's work but the way he presents the information. I totally get what the artist is saying. Sometimes we just need to have the same information presented in a way we understand and for me Joe Cartwright does that. No tricks here just straightforward watercolour how to avoid mistakes or how to rectify errors. Joe only touches lightly on paper, brushes and paints which I was pleased about as there are so many books out there that cover these aspects. On this occasion I was looking for more how to and how not to and this book does exactly that. There are some well explained demonstrations. More than anything I like his explanations on why some paintings or areas of painting do not work and what aspects lifted his work to another level. I guess the book is aimed at artists who have some experience with watercolour, but I am a reasonably new watercolour painter and this book will remain close by for me to refer back to. Thanks so much Joe I am sure this will assist a lot of watercolourists.

A Plethora of Practical Information

This book is exactly what I needed to take my watercolors to the next level. It is clearly written with visual examples. I am beyond the basics, but it is always important to review them from another artist's point of view. Cartwight's loose, yet controlled, technique is exactly what I am trying to achieve. He also covers the painting subjects that interest me, landscapes, street scenes, painting water, and plein air. Painting flowers is not included. I highly recommend this book for those interested in painting in watercolors.

Wonderful discussion and demonstrations to create beautiful watercolors

This book reminds me of the technique of the watercolorist, Joesph Zbukvic. This Joe walks you through his technique for creating "atmosphere and mood" in your paintings. He has wonderful visual references on how to examine and breakdown a photograph to determine depth and color in a painting. I really appreciate that Joe starts a demonstration by showing you an actual photograph and list of supplies he will use to create a painting. He then continues the demonstration by walking you through the phases of his painting. I would highly recommend this book.

A Woman Scientist's Point of View

If you are a woman with any interest at all in the sciences (mathematics and philosophy included), then please read this book. I expected a strongly feministic "the man is holding me down" revision of history. I found a well-balanced and well-documented account of the content and context of the science and scientific lives of women who history has forgotten. I am a 36 year old female scientist, who for the first time has found a source of inspirational female role models in this book. Look, things weren't so good in the past for women. But let's not remain in denial and let's not rewrite the past. Let's read even-handed historical accounts, such as the one presented in this book, and then let's make healthy, well-balanced decisions about how society should best move forward.

The author has put together a comprehensive review of women, more or less lost from history, who participated in the sciences. The book is loosely structured around time periods, covering antiquity through the 18th century. The book contains many references and she clearly states her sources. Some of the more questionable (rabbinical tradition) were probably better left out. In any case, since she states the source, the reader can decide for herself.

Historical Insights

I LOVE this book! It is an odd little tomb but one that we would ALL do well to read. Though the book is a little bit hard to read, as it leans towards the scholarly tomb format, it is still well worth it if you are looking to have an open and educated knowledge base.
This little gem explores the historical roots of sexism and shows the paths many women throughout history have had to resort to in order to be heard and validated, especially in the male dominated world of Math and Science.
Read it, knowledge is ALL-WAYS a good thing and any knowledge that deviates from the accepted sociatal norms is worth exploring. Remember the old addage 'history is written by the winner' here too we see the injustices of history.
