Excellent Anthology

I've always admired Charters work concerning the Beats . It's scholarly and entertaining at the same time. Back in the sixties, if you asked an English professor why Beats weren't covered in the textbook ,you'd probably get a sideways look of disdain. If I were teaching a course on American Lit today, this would be mandatory. Some of the source material has been more or less unobtainable which makes this a true goldmine. It always seems like the Beat movement as a literary topic has been pretty much exhausted, but Ms. Charters has proven that not to be true.

This anthology has some interesting material, particularly the excerpts from the "beats" themselves and the panel discussion of "beat women" at the end. But it leaves out some of the most interesting beats (Philip Whalen, Lew Welch, Kirby Doyle, Lenore Kandel, Richard Brautigan, Albert Saijo etc.) while larding the fat volume with writers who just boringly interpreted or reviewed the beats (Joyce Carol Oates, Alfred Kazin,Mary McCarthy etc.), who were irrelevant to the beats (Anatole Broyard, Jack Spicer, john Updike etc.), or who secretly disliked or openly hated the beats (Norman Podhoretz, William Carlos Williams, Diana Trilling, Kenneth Rexroth etc.) Not really much soul in that. What's the point of making academic hay out of the most anti-academic writers of the 20th century? Well of course the point is--making academic hay, in this case by an author who doesn't seem to care much for the beats herself. Like what F.Scott Fitzgerald said about his Princeton poetry professors who really hated poetry.

As a millennial Republican, Anderson provides a way forward for the party.

The problem is the voting groups Republicans normally rely on are shrinking. Millennials are "flocking to denser areas (cities), they're less likely to go to church regularly, and they're less likely to get married." The millennial generation also happens to be the most diverse. Back in 1970s 89% of Jimmy Carter's voters were white and 1% Hispanic. Today, the percentage of Hispanic voters is at 10% and growing. As millennials become the biggest voting bloc, this shift in demographics sets up a bleak electorate for Republicans.

The good news is Republicans don't have to change their principles; they just need to reemphasize them in a more palpable way for Millennials. Anderson lists countless examples how we can do that. For example, Republicans need to make the case for "the perils of regulation and the power of the market." They need to back companies such as Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb, who are the epitome of innovation and free market. Anderson points to other examples such as Tesla, and even craft beers in Florida.

Anderson also looks at how Republicans brand themselves. Democrats have done a better job with branding Republican ideas than Republicans. Back in 2012, in an interview with MTV, the President took credit for deregulating SEC financial rules for donating money over the internet. This opened the door for crowdfunding through GoFundMe and Kickstarter pages. Deregulation? That sounds awfully Republican.

Anderson touches on social issues: gay marriage, the nuclear family, and the #blacklivesmatter movement. A reoccurring theme is Republicans ought to move forward with policies which empower the individual rather than get caught up in defining "family," or in the cross-hair of the importance of a movement. "We should not and cannot guarantee people equal outcomes, but we ought to strive for equal opportunity."

As a pollster, Anderson also covers how technology has changed the game of politics. President Obama had a great social media presence, but just because you can write a Facebook status does not automatically translate into votes. Nicolas Jolley is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. His publications include The Light of the Soul (1990), The Cambridge Companion to Leibniz (editor, 1995), and Nicolas Malebranche: Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion (co-edited with David Scott, 1997). He is also the editor of the forthcoming Oxford Philosophical Texts edition of Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding.

Excellent survey of Locke's thought for its audience

Nicholas Jolley has produced a great resource for students first encountering Locke or for those who are familiar with Locke but would like to get more into the details of his philosophical views. This book is intended as an introduction to his thought and is directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It gives enough details to begin work on any of the diverse topics covered in it, with references to direct the reader elsewhere for further discussion. Unlike most books on Locke by philosophers, this one also includes his political theory and shows its relation to Locke's other views by tying together threads of his thought from one topic to the next. I thoroughly enjoyed working through it in a graduate seminar taught by the author, but I can see that it would be quite valuable just as a resource or as an accompaniment to someone's trying to approach Locke's thought in detail but without much background.

I neglected to mention one thing about this book. Jolley sees himself not just as a student of what Locke said but as if he is in philosophical interaction with Locke and his critics. He presents many common criticisms of Locke and responds to them. He also leaves Locke stranded in places where he really seems to have gotten himself into trouble. This book does a great job not just approaching the issues but also in trying to clarify them in the terms of contemporary philosophers and in defending Locke against the all-too-quick criticisms he often receives.

About the Author
Dr. Frank Kreith is a Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from the University of Paris in 1965. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and recipient of the ASME Medal. The ASME International established "The Frank Kreith Energy Award" in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the field of renewable energy and heat transfer. His areas of interest include heat transfer, thermal engineering, and solar engineering. He has been a consultant in the field of heat transfer engineering in many parts of the world.

It's a good book, but it has room for improvements

It's a good book, but it has room for improvements. It has no answer to the problems at the end of the chapters, I think that at least a few of the problems should have the answer. And my copy of the book had some problem in the printing process. In the middle of chapter 6, there are about 10 pages that are not supposed to be there. They are from a complete different section of the book.
