About the Author
The Authors: Eberhard Oesterle is managing partner of the neginerring office DS-Plan. He works as an engineering consultant specializing in the energy optimization of buildings. He is the author of numerous publications and holds an honorary professorship at the University of Stuttgart.

Rolf-Dieter Lieb is an engineering consultant specializing ub aerophysics and building physics as well as in energy management at DS-Plan.

Martin Lutz is an architect and managing partner at DS-Plan. He has designed several new facade developments.

Winfried Heusler is director for aluminum technology at the Schco concern. He has been responsible for many fundamental developmetns and has written widely on the subject.

This is a somewhat technical book for construction professionals. Not for idly paging through, despite its attractive, even stylish, execution (although my copy's hard cover was printed upside down). Only commercial architecture, only buildings in Germany.

Very Nice Book! Could hardly put it down! A Must-Read for Anne Lovers everywhere!

This book is a simply "magnificent," "imaginative," and "absolutely overwhelming" book (to use some of Anne's favorite words.) After reading this book, I truly feel like I have been able to get to know Anne so much better then before I read it.

First, I must point out one error that I read in "Before Green Gables." At one point, Anne is musing about how Mrs. Hammond must be very good at delivering babies after having done it six times. At that time, Mrs. Hammond had birthed two regular babies and two sets of twins, going on her third set. Arguably, she had only done it four times, but I suppose each baby might be counted individually.

Second, I must say that the author, Budge Wilson, missed just one important detail (from what I could tell.) She failed to mention that Mrs. Hammond told Anne that "God made Anne's hair red on purpose." which is why Marilla Cuthbert finds Anne so heathan-ish in the original "Anne of Green Gables." In case some of you are not as familiar with Anne as others, I will explain the story more properly. In "Anne of Green Gables", Anne tells Marilla that the reason she never prays or beleives in God is that Mrs. Hammond once told her that God made Anne's hair red on purpose so she never cared for him since. In "Before Green Gables" Anne simply loses interest in God after several of her prayers seem to go unheeded. Instead, she turns to the stars to pray at the orphan assylum.

Thirdly, Budge Wilson merely sped by the fact that the Hammond children all had croup regularly, which, in "Anne of Green Gables" is how Anne can help with Minnie May when she had croup. I was somewhat appeased when Anne helped Noah Thompas through the croup but it was not as effective, in my opinion.

Wonderful & Compelling Prequel to the beloved Anne of Green Gables!

I actually purchased this book after I found out it about from watching the 'Before Green Gables' anime series. (At the end credits, it had listed Adapted from 'Before Green Gables' by Budge Wilson) So I set about looking into it because I just ADORED the anime series! It was so beautiful, sweet, touching and heartwarming! Really made you cry at times, laugh at times and just love Anne the whole while! A truly wonderful series! (If you can get a chance to watch it, I highly recommend it as it fits in PERFECTLY with the whole Anne aura and persona!)
Anyway, I wanted to buy the book it was adapted from, as I own all the Anne books and Miniseries and the Road to Avonlea DVDS, which I loved when it aired on the Disney Channel back in the 90s and still love now! Gus & Felicity forever! ^.~)
I found the book on Amazon at an amazing price and promptly bought it. It arrived very quickly and I read it as soon as it came. I was curious to see if it was very close to the incredible anime series that was based on it and if so, I was sure to love it.

Well, it has many of the points the anime used, but for me, the anime series was much more touching and beautiful. This book was a nice read but I do agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the language was too modern. Not much or in many instances, but enough that it brought you out of 1900 and into modern day. I believe Anne was captured very well, but the other characters weren't as satisfyingly delved into. In the anime that is based on this book, you really come to love the other characters as well as Anne. You find yourself rooting for 'Uncle Bert' and 'Aunt Joanna,' (In Japan, all older men and women are 'uncle' or 'aunt' to a child.) and cry terribly when Bert is run over by a train! He really loved Anne and the Christmas episode was so beautiful!! A must see! In the book, the Christmas scene occurs, and it's very nice, but so much more so in the anime! You will be weeping when Bert gives Joanna her gift, as they dance together...one last time; and when Noah gets sick. In the book, it's rather just glossed over, but in the anime, it's very deep and you come to love the whole family! Even Horace and the boys come to love Anne, as well as Randolph and Mildred! I was shocked in the book that those two never become Anne's friends as they do in the series. Also, Egg Man and Miss Henderson---in the anime, they are so much more personable, lively and FULL OF CHARACTER. In the book, we hardly know them. The coming of Lochinvar is also more fitting to Anne's story than how it is in the book, where they just get a cat. ^^;; Additionally, the Hammonds' story is so sad in the anime and in the book....there's not much to cry over---poor Mr. Hammond had no depth or soul to his character in it. So much more so in the anime! Miss Haggerty was very well done in the book and almost just like how she was in the anime, and Mr. McDougall was very amusing and kind. ^^ In the orphanage---Edna and Tessa are delved into (Tessa maybe too much) and Miss Carlyle, though strict, you realize she really does care about the orphans. Miss Kale is nice the whole time (though maybe laid back and weak) and at the end, you meet up once more with the Thomas Family and the Johnsons, when Anne receives letters from Joanna and Eliza, hand delivered by Eggman & Miss Henderson. It really wraps up her life with them and you have a wonderful, triumphant feeling. Joanna has survived, Bert's picture and a little hat that she meant to give to Anne but wasn't in time to do so, as her most prized treasures. The boys have become more kind and understanding. Eliza has a little girl and we see the birth and childhood of the daughter through the letters. In Anne's eyes, she can be free of any worry for her loved ones. A really wonderful way to end the story, as she climbs on to the ferry with Mrs. Spencer and Lily, to take her to her beloved Prince Edward Island.

The book, while very entertaining and gripping, was just not up to par with the anime series that was based on it. The series had so much more....heart. I still recommend reading it and did enjoy the first part with Walter and Bertha, since that part of the book was NOT in the anime series. (It started when Anne was about 4-5 years old) But the rest....I tried to imagine the characters I had seen, doing what they did in the book, but it was so difficult, as they were all so much more severe and cruel in the book and in the anime, though flawed or with faults, they were somehow 'real' with personality. You FELT for them. In the anime, there were bad times, sad times and cruelty. But overall, a triumph and moral and beauty. Anne was the one who brought light and joy to everyone she met at the end, while also receiving advice and happiness from others.

So, overall, the book was a great read, but after being spoiled by its incredible anime series, I couldn't enjoy it as much. I recommend watching the 'Hello Anne! Before Green Gables' anime series and then reading the book. Or vice versa. Either way, you will really come to love these characters and of course, the wonderful and amazing little Anne even more (if that's possible)!

Can't hold a candle to the original, but still charming

This book attempts to recapture the wonder that seeps from every page of LM Montgomery's delightful Anne of Green Gables series with a prequel outlining Anne's life before she reached PE Island. I knew going in that it wouldn't be a happy story because of Anne's many allusions to a hard childhood in the original novel, so I was prepared for the oppressive hardness of her early life, but it was sad all the same. Budge Wilson does an adequate job of attempting to capture Anne's spirit and thirst for life, but as expected, it feel far short of the original novels. Wilson repeats herself far too often through Anne, and since we already know she can talk the ears off of anyone nearby, even those colorful speeches become dry when they are the same thing over and over. It was just ok, but if you want a really good dose of Anne, opt for the original.

Not what was promised

The book is a decent study guide to supplement the PMBOK, however, it didn't come with any flashcards as it says it should on the front of the book, AND I haven't been able to log into the website for online testing because the site will not send a verification email to complete my registration. I've also noticed one or two questions in the book, with answers that are clearly wrong. (I went back to the PMBOK and verified). Chapter 2, #11 is not C, it's A. I'm sure it's just a typo, but that could be pretty crucial to someone who doesn't know better. It also mentions a CD-rom that should've come with the book. Nope, didn't get that either. The whole point is to be able to take practice tests so that is a big disappointment.

Update: I contacted customer service yesterday and they were very helpful. They responded within an hour and informed me that the website is undergoing maintenance and provided me with a generic passcode that I am able to use to log in and take practice exams. The text does mention a CD-rom and flashcards, but that is all incorporated on the website now according to them. The flashcards can be printed from the website and the various chapters in the book remind you to do that. The misprints can't be helped at this point, but I'm giving this book a 3-star rating (up from 1-star). Customer service is excellent and all the information is available, but the fact still remains that the book isn't as polished as it should be. However, along with the PMBOK, I believe the information in this book will help you pass the test but there is no substitute for reading and due diligence.

Online features are horrible

Passed the PMP today, but not because of this book. I had high hopes for the book to help me be efficient in my self study for the PMP, but the online section was terrible! The state college in my area offers an in depth PM course which I took a few years ago, but due to a few unforeseen issues, I had to delay taking the test. I thought this book and online access was the a good idea since it was on the PMI website, but I was WRONG! The book by itself is of good value if you have a foundation in PM already, but the PMP test is about testing yourself on various scenarios. Once you read the PMBOK you will need a resource that will compliment your studies and the online test is confusing and frustrating to use. Repeated online testing is what helped me solidify my comfort with the exam questions and format. Unfortunately , this online access did not offer any statistics about my progress, some the questions were grammatically wrong, and some of the answers did even make sense. I did contact one of the authors and she responded that improvements were coming, but that is not going to help me pass the test. The online area is undeveloped and raw and not worth your time. My coworkers suggested RMC and I wish I wouldn't have wasted time or money on this product. I abandoned ship and switched to RMC project management online access for $300. The online access and the format is terrific! RMC gives you the ability to test by knowledge area or by process group, then your information is stored for review later. Your progress is collated and averaged and you can run various reports. There are even explanations to why your answer is right or wrong and references back the study guide to research (I skipped the RMC book). Disappointed that this didn't work, but I couldn't jeopardize my testing for a product that needs to mature.

I was rather disappointed in this book. First of all, while it is concise, that is because it suggests reading the PMBOK chapter guide four times in conjunction with using this book. To be fair, two of these times are supposed to be quick. I didn't follow the recommended method of study because it was only one of my tools for studying for my PMP. If it was your only tool, yes, perhaps their study method is necessary but certainly not if you have other study tools.

I probably am not going to remember everything that was disappointing about this book, but let me see if I can try...
- The sample final exam included is only 50 questions
- The sample questions in each chapter would often be repeats from the assessment exam at the beginning of the book
- The explanations to the various questions are only okay. Sometimes, they will only say something like "B is a good answer but C is better" without explaining what makes C better. Frequently, it will explain why A, B & D are wrong but never comment on C. For me, learning why the right answer is right is just as important as why the wrong answer is wrong.
- You have to jump through about 400 hoops to get to the "1300 practice questions." Seriously. First, you have to sign up to access the WAV content (FYI - these aren't audio files, it's an acronym for Web Added Value. They could have come up with something better.) Second, you have to download instructions on how to access the test bank. Third, you have to go to the test bank and sign up. Fourth, you have to register to the PMP course. Fifth, once you are FINALLY IN, you have to register EACH TIME YOU TAKE AN EXAM OR KNOWLEDGE AREA TEST, including providing your email address which seems to have no benefit because...
- Once you leave a practice exam or knowledge area test, you NEVER can see the results again. They don't email them to you or provide a handy section that lists each attempt you took with the results
- I took each of the knowledge area tests at least once (I'd estimate that I took three or four twice) and I did one practice exam. Let's assume that I saw 500 questions. The number of times I saw a question again was appalling. Even on the practice exam, questions were repeated. If they actually have 1300 questions, it would take you FOREVER to actually see them all. I'd estimate that on the practice exam, 10-20% of the questions were ones I had already seen. And that 10-20% is scaled back from the 25%-40% I actually feel were repeated but have reduced my estimate since I have a tendency to overestimate.
- the formatting of the questions left a lot to be desired sometimes. You'd get a question that involved EVM and the information wouldn't be in a table so it would be so hard to read.

Overall, if you are looking for a book that is going to give you good prep with questions as well as reviewing material, this might not be for you. If you just want something to help you review the material, it might be a good option.

Great book for students

Paul Gahlinger, the author of Illegal Drugs, chose to write the book because he wanted to provide knowledge about illegal drugs and how they are abused to others. He believes that one can not stop all drug use, but you can reduce the harm. This can be done by education. The author did a good job of doing this because he let the reader know what the consequences were of taking the drugs and what to do if someone overdosed. When I started to read this book, I expected to learn about the drug itself and the harmful effects that it puts one through. This is exactly what I got, plus more. The best thing that I got from this book was the harm that the drugs can do to you. Some effects can lead to or even be death. The only thing that I would leave out is how to make the drugs. I feel like this could tempt people to try and make one of the drugs. The book could have been improved by adding more stories to make it more interesting. I would recommend this book to most students in order to help make them aware of the harmful effects of the drugs. I would also reccomend it to anyone who is interested in the study of illegal drugs. This is a good choice for a chemistry class because it incorporated a lot of chemical formulas and equations and the mixing of different elements to create the illegal drugs.

Great Book, Covers physical and chemical side of drugs

Illegal Drugs was written by Paul Gahlinger, for he wanted to provide in-depth knowledge about illegal drugs. He believes that the best decision regarding drugs is a well-informed decision, rather than simply saying yes or no. This can be done by education. Gahlinger accomplished his goal of informing the reader about the various illegal drugs; I learned a lot about both the physical and chemical sides of drugs.
When I first started to read this book, I expected the book to be all about why the drug is bad and such, but the book was written in an objective, informative manner. The best thing Ive taken away from reading this book is that certain drugs can vary on how dangerous they are. The worst thing I've taken away from this book is that drugs are made illegal simply because the drawbacks of taking the drugs outweigh the positive effects of the drugs. This book could be improved by removing the instructions on how to produce some of the easier to make drugs such as methamphetamine because the guide could promote drug use. I would definitely recommend this book. The The only thing that I would leave out is how to make the drugs. I would recommend this book to all middle-school+ students to make students more aware of the effects drugs have on them. I would also recommend it to someone who might be interested in a certain topic as most chapters cover the background info and stats of the drug well. Anyone can read this book, but it is NOT meant to be read from front to back. I recommend you treat it as a reference source.

Worth reading...

The author wrote this book for the purpose of spreading knowledge on drugs. He wanted readers to not only be aware of the dangers behind drugs, but the effects they have on users. After reading this book I felt as though the author succeeded in accomplishing his goal of getting his message and ideas on drugs out to me. When first reading this book I had expected long and dull facts on why drugs are evil. This turned out to be false when the author not only gave out a humorous tone in the reading, but the book also talked about the advantages some drugs actually have. My favorite part in the book (however terrible it seems) was the symptoms for overdose and long term illnesses from drugs. As great of a book Illegal Drugs seems to be it did have its slow points in the long and dreary historical information sections on the drug. Nevertheless it was a great book overall.
An improvement this book could have made was the compactment of information in the book. Less long paragraphs of information, more summaries and analysis. I would recommend this book to ages 10 and up. Mainly teens and high schoolers would benefit the most from reading this book. Seeing this to be an excellent choice for spreading information to the Sophomores of Stuart Hall, I think that everyone should try this book because a penny saved is a penny earned…

For those of you who has never met Odd Thomas you will want this person to be your friend and be devoted to him. I have these books on my shelf but I never get tired of bringing him up on my kindle and re-living his adventures.

My only wish is that we have more books with tales of "Service" to look forward to! I want to know about Odd and Stormy in their next chapter..

Hot on the heels of the bestseller He's Just Not That Into You comes this funny, forthright response from author and sex therapist Kerner. The author of the sex guide She Comes First and the "dating doctor" for Lifetime TV, Kerner takes up the cause of "Sex and the City" women everywhere, urging ladies to dump the "in-the-meantime" men and raise their standards on the husband hunt. Kerner's book will appeal to the chick lit audience, with his sassy quizzes and blunt language, as when he writes that women settle on a mediocre boyfriend because "they like having their egos and (and lower parts) stroked." How unfortunate, then, that Kern's logic is often so sloppy. Can it really always be true, as he writes, that being married "is harder than being single, even in the best of circumstances" or that "If women were really disposed to have sex like men, they'd be greater consumers of porn and prostitution"? The book equivocates in trying to promote sexual freedom while encouraging emotional responsibility, and all the laugh lines don't quite hide the fact that the entire book's wisdom is essentially contained in the subtitle. A final chapter, written jointly by Kerner and his wife, does stand out for its personality and wit. Here's hoping they team up for a whole book next time. Meanwhile, this one's sure to do brisk business among singletons.

I bought this book for my girlfriend who struggles with the wrong men. As her bestie I try to give advise as to what I see wrong with each guy's behavior and why they run. This little book will help her see the pattern early and realize he's really not for her either!

Wake up and smell your SELF EMPOWERMENT

This book kicks "He's not that into You" firmly in the crotch. Thank the Good Lord that someone finally did.

The first chapters explain why it's a bad idea for women to have casual sex. DUH!!! For me and my friends, this is as true as the sky is blue. Having sex like a man is a myth. I cannot fathom why people are watching "Sex and the City" and believing it. Ian Kerner, the author, explains in scientific terms why it's not likely for women to have sex that is casual as well as enjoyable. He goes into hormones, the way other mammals act, etc. This book suggests that having "sex like a man" is UN-empowering, despite what your local commando feminist might say.

Note to the audience: For those readers who are squeamish about sex and masturbation, the first couple of chapters are going to be uncomfortable. If you're not having sex, this book is probably not useful for you. Also, if you have problems finding a guy, this book is not for you. However, if you find that you are dating guys that you're not that into, this book is for you. Also, if you're a parent and your daughter is going away to college, I'd recommend this book for your daughter. It might keep her away from the frat houses. Believe me, it happens, and it's better for her to get a good whiff of reality before she is out on her own.

The second and third couple of chapters explain why you should not seriously date someone who you're not that into. I don't think that these chapters are as good as the first, but I identify with dating people who I am not that into. It's a waste of time. You know from the very beginning that you're not going to marry them, and spending time by yourself is so much more enjoyable and empowering.

Overall, I think that this book is a four star book, but I am giving it five simply because it kicks some butt.

A Must-Read for Single Women...

I picked up this book yesterday and couldn't put it down. I just wish it had come out sooner -- like when I started my downward spirial of dating guys that I wasn't that into when I graduated from college.

The book is easy-to-read and funny. Forget "The Rules." This book provides useful, non-preachy advice. For some funny reason, I felt like Dr. Kerner was cheering me on from the sidelines. Definitely worth buying. Don't judge this one by the picture on its cover....
