About the Author
Reginald Jacques was born in 1894 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire and studied at Queen's College, Oxford, where he later became organist and director of music in 1926. Reginald Jacques was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936. From 1931 to 1960 he was conductor of The Bach Choir in London. In 1936 he founded his own Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960. In 1954 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died in 1969. John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. Willcocks also conducted The Bach Choir for 38 years, retiring in 1998. Sir David died in September 2015.

great book of Xmas carols with 4 part harmony

Got this as our FacStaff choir used it for our Christmas Concert this year. Great arrangements, good 4 part harmonies and good variety. What more can you ask for. If you love Christmas and love to sing both secular and religious carols, this is the place to start for any group that you are a part of.

A solid starting point for Christmas choral concert music!

Carols for Choirs 1 comprises 50 carols, mostly for mixed SATB voices, well blended from both traditional and modern sources as well as secular versus sacred. Several familiar texts such as "Away in a Manger", "Coventry Carol" and "I Saw Three Ships" appear in two different musical settings which will give choirs the ability to present a wider variety of music to informed audiences that might well be jaded with the more typical Christmas fare.

Some pieces such as Mendelssohn's "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" or "O Come All Ye Faithful" are presented with the well known upper voice descant and oft heard harmonies that are so familiar it's probable even "con belto" fortissimo audience participants might be heard singing in four parts.

In marked contrast, other pieces such as "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" or JS Bach's harmonization of "O Little One Sweet", while not requiring virtuosity, will require careful practice, study and complete attention to choral detail such as dynamics, endings and articulation in order to pull off a polished, crowd-pleasing a cappella performance.

Highly recommended for regular choral singers and conductors.

Agatha Rocks!

Fans of Agatha Raisin know that her culinary efforts are usually disastrous. Her intentions were good but her lazy, impatient style of cooking guaranteed miserable, possibly tragic results. I found this story to be quite humorous. It contributed to a relaxing afternoon of reading and was well worth the money.

I'm a M.C.Beaton fan and especially an Agatha Raisin fan. However, the book stopped when everything was getting interesting. I've read almost all of M.C. Beaton books but this one stumped me. It left me hanging.

Agatha Raisin and the Christmas Crumble

This is not a full length novel it is a novella, so if you only like reading novel length stories then you will need to steer clear of this one. That said I found it an enjoyable read and it would be ideal for reading after Christmas dinner - I decided not to wait that long before reading it.

Agatha is wondering what to do at Christmas and decides while talking to Mrs Bloxby to invite six elderly people for Christmas lunch. So far so good but regular readers of this series will immediately hear alarm bells ringing when they realise that Agatha is going to make the Christmas Pudding herself.

I liked the portraits of the six elderly but quite different guests, they are an interesting collection. The dinner itself is amusing and the unexpected death - of course there has to be one - is well done. If you want an amusing story to relax with at any time then try this - it takes about an hour to read.

Great, timeless adventure story

This is an outstanding book for those who enjoy stories loaded with adventure and intrigue. I've read many Alistar MacLean novels and enjoyed every one.

What I find quite stunning is one reviewer claims MacLean's depiction of the Japanese Military of the time is "racist" while another says MacLean depicts the Japanese conquerors as "savage monsters". I've got news for you...they were indeed savage, brutal monsters. Many of the leaders of the Japanese Imperial Army during those times were the most rabid of racists. The reviewers obviously have never spent time in SE Asia and talked to any of the inhabitants that were alive during the Japanese occupation of those countries. They'll be the first to tell you how absolutely cruel and brutal the Japanese Army truly was. These reviewers have no idea of the incredible hardships imposed by the ruthless Japanese conquerors on the people of Viet Nam, the Phillipines, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, etc. I look at such reviews as incredibly naive.

Talk to a survivor of the Bataan Death March about the humanity of the Japanese Army. Wake Island was captured shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. When food supplies started to run scarce on the island, the Japanese lined up a large group of American civilian contractors they had taken prisoner and shot them all to death on the beach. The non-racist Japanese convinced the civilians living on many of the islands they had conquered not to surrender themselves to the Americans who the claimed would enslave them and torture them to death. They ordered those people to hurl themselves off tall cliffs and kill themselves rather than surrender to the Americans. Unfortunately countless numbers of those civilians believed the Japanese and followed their orders. Savage, brutal monsters indeed!

Well-executed adventure

I always loved Alistair MacLean novels. For adventure, I found him to be one of the most consistent and satisfying authors out there. This is one of his best. It has twists and turns, as always, but is also a bit more harrowing than some of his other novels. All of which sets everything up nicely for a great denouement.

Fall from grace...

Alistair Maclean's ambitious 1958 adventure novel "South by Java Head" is set against the fall of the British stronghold of Singapore to the Imperial Japanese Army in February 1942. A motley and desperate collection of soldiers, nurses, civilians, a small boy, and even a spy attempt to escape by sea aboard a tramp steamer. Nothing will be easy for the refugees, who survive the sinking of two ships by Japanese war planes and end up in open life boats in the South China Sea. Although they don't realize it, they are also at risk from a traitor or traitors in their midst...

"South by Java Head" was master storyteller Maclean's third novel, and it is a bit uneven. There is some good work here: Maclean evokes the dying City of Singapore with a haunting quality that will stay with the reader. The plot has the twists and turns that would become a Maclean trademark. The hero, First Officer Johnny Nicholson, is a tough but honorable man, nearly equal to every crisis. Unfortunately, Maclean tries to pack too much into the storyline. There are too many characters, facing one crisis after another. The secret that is the source of at least some of the trouble in the story hardly seems worth it when finally revealed, nor does Maclean put much effort into a brief romance for the hero. The Japanese are portrayed as two-dimensional monsters.

"South by Java Head" is recommended to Maclean's fans, who are likely to overlook the novel's faults for the chance of an entertaining tale of the Second World War.

Interesting, albeit a bit baffling

I was looking for some advanced homeschooling materials when the opportunity to review this DVD set came up. I think that this course would be OK as an advanced high school level physics class, but really it's more of a college level course, for two reasons... First, the professor is credentialed to teach at the college level, and second, the pace of the course and the materials covered are relevant to freshman or even sophomore level science. The professor is well spoken, but he speaks rather quickly, and because he isn't addressing an audience directly (other than the camera), I think he's missing out on the quizzical looks on his students faces when he starts down the rabbit hole, so to speak. Some of what he talks about is engaging and interesting, but when he poses a question that's nonsensical and then takes several minutes to admit it's not a good question, well, that's a bit too much like watching a dog chase its own tail.

The course was engaging enough that I continued to watch the entire lecture on "What is Time" even after making these observations. I think I will save the rest of the course, however, for my son to use when he is at that level in his homeschooling program (provided that DVD players still exist in 2025).

Cool, Fun and Essential

This book covers a vital an oft-neglected period in animation history. When I first laid eyes upon it, in a bookstore, I think I audibly gasped. It is that beautiful. Do not hesitate to purchase this book, which incidentally, won the Theatre Library Association Award for outstanding book in the area of film or broadcasting. Hopefully, there'll be a sequel.

'Thought I'd Died and Gone to Cartoon Heaven

Like many of my peers, as I grew up, my interest in animation gravitated toward the full animation of the Golden Age: Robert McKimson, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, et al, for a long while disdaining any form of animated minimalism, even the kind represented in this book. By the age of 7 or 8, we had come to associate Top Cat, Deputy Dawg, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and all the minimal animation that had once been among our favorites with shoddy cheapness. (Even as a small child, I remember several of us sitting around talking about cartoons, and laughing to scorn at the way the same background tree kept passing every couple of seconds in Hanna-Barbera chase scenes. We wondered, did they think we weren't catching that?!) 'Limited animation', those dread words, became poision for all us growing young animation fans.

I'm not sure when my respect and interest in minimal/modern animation returned in a changed form, but I think it had to be in the mid 80s, when the best of UPA appeared suddenly on a couple of VHS tapes: Gerald McBoing Boing, The Tell-Tale Heart, Unicorn in the Garden, Christopher Crumpet, The Rise of Duton Lange, Family Circus, etc. On the rebound, the '50s fine art/graphic design style of these cartoons knocked me out. After seeing these shorts, I started seeking out more examples of this style of animation in old TV commercial reels, and then started noticing the style spilling over into point of purchase, packaging design and magazine ads of the period. By this point, I was a fatally hooked "modern."

This book will throughly scratch the itch of those baby boomers whose earliest TV memories may include those brief Tom Terrific segments from Captain Kangaroo, as well as the younger reader who will feel the irresistable draw of a very strong retro style. The pictures (and there are a ton of them) are pretty, and instantly evocative, and the text hits a smart median between scholarly and entertaining.

Five stars. If you have anyone with any level of popular art/film/animation/graphic design interest on your Christmas list, I'd bear this book in mind.

Fine selection of essays by a great man

This comparatively short book consists of extremely well-selected essays by the great Scottish philosopher and historian, on everything from public credit to delicacy of taste. Also included are the different classes of philosphers, including the class Hume falls under, The Sceptic (Hume's sp.). There is also an exceedingly interesting essay on the populousness of the world in ancient times. Apparently, the accepted notion at Hume's time was that there were hordes of people in ancient times and that our race has been dwindling ever since. Hume, on the other hand, proposes the radical notion that just the opposite is the case, and sets out to prove it quite handily.-Overall, the best introduction to one of my favorite writers that I've yet to read.

Highly entertaining corpus of essays

Written in the highly polished Augustan prose style of the period, this is a fine selection of essays from the pen of the great Scottish philosopher, historian and economist, David Hume. The essays range from aesthetics, commerce, history and ethics, which include such pieces as "The Epicurean", "The Stoic" and "The Sceptic" (Hume's own credo) all which are rather curiously positioned and excellently written guides to living. "Of the Immortality of the Soul" and "Of Suicide", two of Hume's most controversial essays touching on theological topics, are also included in this volume. Both succeeded, with their bold, original arguments, in outraging the British clergy, which helps us to understand why Hume decided to have them published posthumously.

Excellent View of Hume

Hume is known today primarily for his seminal philosophical works. He regarded himself, however, as a man of letters who contributed to many areas and he was known best to his contemporaries as a historian. This nice collection of essays displays the breadth of Hume's interests and his well developed writing style. Hume was particularly interested in essays which would bring important topics before a broad public and wrote in an accessible and often entertaining style. Some of Hume's best known essays on philosophical and religous topics are included in this collection. What may be of greatest interest are some of the lesser known essays which display both the versatility and the power of Hume's intellect. Included are essays on economics and international trade, and also some political theory. Hume was an opponent of mercantilist ideas, supporting the largely correct notion that trade would enrich all parties. His political theory is particularly interesting. In contradistinction to the widely accepted ideas of the time, Hume suggested that republican governments could be stable if the size of the republic was large enough to encompass enough competing groups to prevent one from assuming complete control. It is known that James Madison read Hume in the period leading up to the Constitutional Convention and many scholars suspect that Hume's ideas were the germ of the defense of republicanism/federalism developed by Madison in the Federalist Papers. A momentous idea with momentous consequences.

Essential to understanding the Drug War

This book describes in detail -- at a very personal level -- how drug dealers from white prosperous backgrounds operate on college campuses, and do so with almost complete freedom. The contrast with how young men of color are treated could not be more vivid. The dealers described in this carefully researched book move large amounts of illegal drugs, are tied into drug networks that cross state lines and go into Mexico, and yet rarely face any consequences, even when they move large amounts of illegal drugs in their flashy personal cars, speeding, parking illegally, and brazenly confronting the police. Meanwhile, of course, young people of color, even though they act with discretion and sometimes even if they don't even use drugs, face harassment and the threat of prison sentences counted in decades.

By any criterion, these dealers do as much harm as any other drug dealer, break the same laws, and yet are keenly aware that it is almost impossible that they will get in any trouble, let alone face the long prison sentences that are commonplace in inner city neighborhoods. A major reason for this, the book makes clear, is the existence of gatekeepers, including physicians, college officials, campus police, parents, and ordinary law enforcement, all of whom protect these dealers from consequences.

This is an essential book for understanding racial disparity in this nation, easily deserving a place on the shelf with American Apartheid, the groundbreaking book on housing segregation, Black Wealth/White Wealth, Medical Apartheid, and The New Jim Crow. However, unlike these critical books, Dorm Room Dealers focuses on the privileges given to prosperous white people, making clear that they include not only material goods and social status but protection from the consequences of one's action, no matter how deeply condemned they are to society.

important research, a little dry

I am a clinical psychologist who just finished reading Dorm Room Dealers. I work with a lot of clients who are working on recovery from substance abuse and have a particular interest in reading more about drugs, drug culture, and drug policies.

In this book, the authors spent about 6 years infiltrating college campuses across California and getting to know the college drug selling business from the inside out. They interviewed many people and were able to discuss a variety of ways in which white, upper middle class white students who sold drugs operated differently than the stereotypical lower class urban minorities. This is an important topic, and this book definitely helped me to understand this better; their book gives me a basis to feel like I know what I'm talking about if I were to now discuss the biases in law enforcement when it comes to drug policy.

However, before buying this book, you should note that it reads like a research paper and can be kind of dry and repetitive. That was a major downside which made it kind of tedious for me to plow through this book.

The missing link in war-on-drug literature

We don't fight the war on drugs against rich college-educated white folks.

Too many books (my own included) treat drug crimes like it's a black thing that whites wouldn't understand. Well it's not like that. Most drug dealers are white. Most drug users are white. It just these people doesn't make the news (or get police attention).

What about all those college drug dealers? Why do we never hear about them? Well this book answers that. I mean, anybody who has gone to college knows you can buy drugs in college. It's like these college drug dealers have no fear of ever getting caught.

Exactly.

These dorm-room dealers sell drugs like they're dorm-room posters. Everybody can see them. They have no fear. You see, the rules are different for them. College drug dealers get in the game, make some cash (or support their habit), and then graduate and get a job, maybe in daddy's firm.

Am I oversimplifying? Of course. You should buy the book. It's outstanding ethnography.
