BAUHAUS FUNDAMENTALS
By A Customer
This thin volume is a wonderful collection of essays on the typography, design and graphic design of this school that can be considered the heralding in of moderism.
The layout of the book, sparse and clean, was designed by the editors, Joanne Savio and Mike Mills in a manner that adheres to Bauhaus design principles. Well illustrated throughout with examples of the works of Bauhaus artists, the book is a pleasure to look as well as to read.

This books is an excellent overview and introduction to the Bauhaus in terms of it's impact and theories, in a concise, generalized form. Recommended for design aficionados, students of design and those who want a look at the theories behind the awesomeness that was the bauhaus.

Fantastic visual and unique story.
By Scarlet Aingeal
I received a free copy of Mind Games from the publisher in return for an honest review.

In a world where almost everyone lives, learns and plays in virtual worlds, Luna is one of the few who refuses the implant that makes this possible. Luna is a Refuser, she learns the old fashioned way and she lives in the real world, but she has a secret. Can she protect that secret and herself from PareCo, the creators of the implants and the virtual worlds.

I really enjoyed this one, the writing style flowed very well and it was a pleasure to read. The world building made everything easy to picture in my minds eye, it really made the book stand out and feel real.

I can see technology easily heading this way, it's not outside the realms of believability that this could actually become reality in the future. The plot was really intriguing and unique and although there is a frightening reality to the consequences of something like this happening, I couldn't help but think how much fun being able to access virtual worlds in this way would be.

The different take on hackers was refreshing and I really was not expecting that twist at the end. I'm not going to give away any of the plot, but the shocking reality of those who hold the power and how far they will go to maintain that power is scary believable.

The only thing I can say I'm not a fan of is the cover, it wouldn't catch my attention and draw me to pick up the book to find out more.

Mind Games
By Sarah
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Hachette Children's Books and NetGalley.)

“Don’t let them notice you’re different.”

This was an interesting sci-fi/dystopian story, and I loved the twists.

I felt quite sorry for Luna at the start of this story. The way everyone treated her life a second-class citizen because she didn’t want to ‘plug-in’ to the virtual world was pretty bad. Especially considering that she hadn’t spoken to her father in weeks because he chose to be plugged-in all the time, and never came back to his body to see her.

“What were you thinking?” she says. “I’ve a good mind to get your father in here, and –”
I look up. I know an empty threat when I hear one. “Please do. I haven’t seen him in weeks.”

The storyline in this followed Luna as her plans to get expelled backfired, and she found herself being given the sort of assignment that she really didn’t want. There were so many twists in this story though! The pace itself was very slow in places, but thankfully the twists made up for it, especially the ones at the end. I also liked how the author managed to work her previous book ‘Slated’ into the storyline of this one!

“What is this fictional world, ‘Slated’? I’ve never heard of it,” I say out loud.

There wasn’t really any romance in this one, other than Luna stating categorically that she was not going to have a relationship with her best friend’s boyfriend, just because they were in the same place together.

“When I finally turn and meet their eyes I smile for the first time in a long while. I may seek the truth, but I still have my secrets.”

The ending to this had lots of twists, and it was these that definitely bumped up the rating on this one for me. The slowness of this story made it a three, but the twists made it a 4.

A boring read which could have been so much more.

DNF at 50 %

I wonder if I was fooled by the gorgeous cover, or the premise of Mind Games. As with so many books these days, a synopsis can be either exactly what you think it is, or turn out to be something entirely different. It's sad to say that Teri Terry's novel falls into the last category.

Throughout my reading experience, it was required to read this book with all the attention and focus I could get. Most of the times it's not necessarily a bad thing, but I didn't like how Mind Games played with my mind. I had to read every single word with care and attention, in order to follow along and understand both the story and the world building. Nonetheless, I still got very confused along the way. Mind you, I don't hold a single grudge against being thrown into the world of a book without any explanations. It's mostly a lot of fun because I have to figure out what is going on all on my own, but not in this case.

There was an overload of unknown terms, combined with such little explanation. The only choice I had was to continue anyway and hope that I would be less confused as I go on. None of that happened. Once I started to get a hold of the story, so many other aspects turned my knowledge into chaos. A lot of that had to do with Terry's futuristic world full of technology. This is where a certain aspect I adored jumps in: the virtual reality. It was my ultimate main reason for requesting the book in the first place, and also what made the book so fascinating. It was so different from any other dystopian I've read before. How could I not be excited about that? However, things started to take a turn when I that aspect fell flat. In my opinion, there wasn't much world building to be found. I felt like a lot was just thrown in my face, and I had to deal with it. I couldn't connect to anything and because of the lack of world building, I never understood how it all worked or how some things were even possible.

The vague plot dragged immensely, and at some point I had no desire whatsoever in picking it up again, ultimately resulting in a DNF. As sad as I am to admit it, Mind Games was all in all, a boring read which could have been so much more.

Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe

Things Fall Apart tells two intertwining stories, both centering on Okonkwo, a “strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo’s fall from grace with the tribal world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world with the arrival of aggressive European missionaries. These perfectly harmonized twin dramas are informed by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul.

Amazon.com Review
One of Chinua Achebe's many achievements in his acclaimed first novel, Things Fall Apart, is his relentlessly unsentimental rendering of Nigerian tribal life before and after the coming of colonialism. First published in 1958, just two years before Nigeria declared independence from Great Britain, the book eschews the obvious temptation of depicting pre-colonial life as a kind of Eden. Instead, Achebe sketches a world in which violence, war, and suffering exist, but are balanced by a strong sense of tradition, ritual, and social coherence. His Ibo protagonist, Okonkwo, is a self-made man. The son of a charming ne'er-do-well, he has worked all his life to overcome his father's weakness and has arrived, finally, at great prosperity and even greater reputation among his fellows in the village of Umuofia. Okonkwo is a champion wrestler, a prosperous farmer, husband to three wives and father to several children. He is also a man who exhibits flaws well-known in Greek tragedy: Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children. Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was deeper and more intimate than the fear of evil and capricious gods and of magic, the fear of the forest, and of the forces of nature, malevolent, red in tooth and claw. Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. And yet Achebe manages to make this cruel man deeply sympathetic. He is fond of his eldest daughter, and also of Ikemefuna, a young boy sent from another village as compensation for the wrongful death of a young woman from Umuofia. He even begins to feel pride in his eldest son, in whom he has too often seen his own father. Unfortunately, a series of tragic events tests the mettle of this strong man, and it is his fear of weakness that ultimately undoes him.

Achebe does not introduce the theme of colonialism until the last 50 pages or so. By then, Okonkwo has lost everything and been driven into exile. And yet, within the traditions of his culture, he still has hope of redemption. The arrival of missionaries in Umuofia, however, followed by representatives of the colonial government, completely disrupts Ibo culture, and in the chasm between old ways and new, Okonkwo is lost forever. Deceptively simple in its prose, Things Fall Apart packs a powerful punch as Achebe holds up the ruin of one proud man to stand for the destruction of an entire culture. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal
Peter Frances James offers a superb narration of Nigerian novelist Achebe's deceptively simple 1959 masterpiece. In direct, almost fable-like prose, it depicts the rise and fall of Okonkwo, a Nigerian whose sense of manliness is more akin to that of his warrior ancestors than to that of his fellow clansmen who have converted to Christianity and are appeasing the British administrators who infiltrate their village. The tough, proud, hardworking Okonkwo is at once a quintessential old-order Nigerian and a universal character in whom sons of all races have identified the figure of their father. Achebe creates a many-sided picture of village life and a sympathetic hero. A good recording of this novel has been long overdue, and the unhurried grace and quiet dignity of James's narration make it essential for every collection.?Peter Josyph, New York

It is probably one of the books that will live forever going by the calibers of people in the world that testify to its originality. . . . Achebe’s wise and subtle story-telling cuts to the heart of these tribal people with humanity, warmth and humour.”

In this English professor's all-time top five
By S. Ward
One of the best books I've ever read, in my top five of all time, and I'm an English professor, so you know I've done some reading. I believe I read it in a matter of two or three hours the first time because I was desperate to know what was going to happen to Okonkwo and his kin with the invasion of European colonization. Do not be put off by what you may have heard about the violence and/or cruelty; there are a few parts where the content is a little rough, but the unflinching lack of sentimentalism - the matter-of-fact tone - makes the events tolerable. I teach a lot of folks who are older teens/early twenties, and honestly, I don't think this is a book that should be taught in high school or at the undergrad level because I think it actually helps to have some life behind you when you read it for the first time. If I knew in advance (which I never do) that I was going to have a class full of people over thirty, I would use it in a class without question. I would also say it's a must-read for men because of its powerful depictions of the conflicts between fathers, sons, and just male kinship relationships in general. Achebe also gives great insight into two strong powerful female characters, his second wife and one of his daughters, even though they have a minimal amount of page time.

A beautifully constructed song of life, tradition, and modernity
By Kenn Vance
This short novel has a distinct voice and lyrical style. This might be somewhat challenging but the messages and tones are clear, and the chapters are short, so that even flipping back to the beginning of a chapter, or to the glossary in the back, or looking up an Igbo word on your smartphone won't take you out of the flow of the story or make this book too daunting to read. The short chapter are constructed in a way to be part of the story - the way the story is told is part of the total message of the book. But whether you pick up on it subconsciously or through careful and thoughtful reading and analysis, Achebe is always pulling you in one direction so you won't get lost and the meaning is always clear.

I really appreciate how the book presents a variety of emotions and so-called "sins", such as anger, shame, pride, laziness, and even love without judgement or sentiment. The book is as much about the inner-turmoil of the main characters as the external turmoil of a scoiety bounded by tradition and harried by imperialism.

Falls Apart at the End
By Michael Haig
***SPOILER ALERT

The epigraph to _Things Fall Apart_ is a quotation from Yeats's famous poem, "The Second Coming". This is also the source of the novel's title. It is not clear how Yeats's authority applies to the novel. Perhaps it is a heavy irony: the West may prophesize the end of the Christian era, but among the Nigerian natives Christian religion merely devastates native beliefs. In this way Achebe repudiates Western spirituality wholly: faith may decline in the West, but it should never have got started in the first place in Nigeria.

Yet the ending of the novel is unsatisfying. Okonkwo's suicide seems out of character: as his friend, Obierika, explains to the white men, he has infringed the laws of his clan and is accursed. All through the novel Okonkwo is a proud man, a strong man, intensely conscious of his position among the clan. That he should so seriously violate himself socially and spiritually seems unlikely. Achebe builds him up against the emasculating influence of the church, but then he throws him away at the end, like so much carrion for Western crows to peck at. Perhaps we feel for him in his apparently utter despair, but Achebe has stressed his strength (not only is he a famous wrestler and warrior, he is also a self-made man), and it is more disappointing than moving to discover at the novel's end that all this is nothing. It is as though the Christianity deprecated in the novel somehow proves its superiority: not only does Okonkwo do what Judas Iscariot did, he is also cursed by his own spiritual beliefs.

Okonkwo is not much of a hero really. He routinely beats his family when they act contrary to his inclinations, he takes part in ritualistic murder. His regret for the passing away of the warrior code strikes one as a typical twentieth-century regret, like Eliot's "[i]f you came at night like a broken king" or Lawrence's disaffection with Sir Clifford: "'Worthy men are no more,' Okonkwo sighed as he remembered those days". Achebe mounts in effect a double-pronged attack: against the Christian invasion, and, by casting Okonkwo away, against the native religion. The reader is left at the end with nothing: neither with an effective critique of Christianity as propogated by the West, nor with an affirmation of native religion. It seems that the reader must make do with the violence that actually takes place, the District Commissioner, planning his book on the subject, having the last word.

_Things Fall Apart_ is quite well-written. It brings the African villagers vividly to life. But we are not privileged to see a final show-down between native belief and the invading Christianity, which might have given us more in the way of truth and enlightenment.

Lucrezia Tornabuoni de' Medici and The Medici Family in the Fifteenth Century, by Maria Grazia Pernis, Laurie Schneider Adams

Lucrezia Tornabuoni de’ Medici and the Medici Family in the Fifteenth Century is a fresh, new biography of a Renaissance woman who lived during the heyday of Medici power. A remarkable person in her own right, the author of religious poems and sacred narratives, as well as an accomplished businesswoman, Lucrezia was the mother of Lorenzo the Magnificent, the grandmother of two popes, and the great-great grandmother of Catherine de’ Medici, Queen of France. This glimpse of her life and times is a window onto the political intrigues and intellectual achievements of Medici Florence.

Review
Lucrezia was both ordinary and extraordinary...  She composed a series of poems on apocryphal subjects, including Judith, Esther, and Susanna.  In this section, the authors make a particularly effective argument about Lucrezia's ability to use these poems to explore themes of value for her own life,..

Memories of Heaven: Children's Astounding Recollections of the Time Before They Came to Earth, by Wayne Dyer, Dee Garnes, Dianna Hicks-Gar

Nineteenth-century British poet William Wordsworth expressed the idea that we gradually lose our intimate knowledge of heaven as we grow up, observing that “our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting” of our previous heavenly existence.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and co-author Dee Garnes had often talked about how the ones who know the most about God are those who have just recently been wrapped in the arms of the Divine, our infants and toddlers. In fact, Dee had an interaction with her own young son that convinced her of this. Curious about this phenomenon, Wayne and Dee decided to issue an invitation to parents all over the world to share their experiences. The overwhelming response they received prompted them to put together this book, which includes the most interesting and illuminating of these stories in which very young children speak about their remembrances before they were born.

It seems that infants and toddlers often arrive here with memories of their lifetimes in the spirit world and frequently provide evidence of this to their immediate families. They tell of dialogues with God, give evidence that they themselves had a hand in picking their own parents, speak about long-deceased family members they knew while in the dimension of Spirit, verify past-life recollections, and speak eloquently and accurately of a kind of Divine love that exists beyond this physical realm—and even of times when telepathic communication took place, as well as the ability to decide just when they would come here to Earth.

This fascinating book encourages parents and grandparents to take a much more active role in communicating with their new arrivals . . . and to realize that there is far more to this earthly experience than what we perceive with our five senses.

Book Review: This book is a joyous celebration of the innocence and mystery of life.

Memories of Heaven
Children's Astounding Recollections of the Time Before They Came to Earth

By Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dianna (Dee) Hicks-Garnes

Readers familiar with Dr. Wayne Dyer know he is laughing joyously from Heaven as his final book is released in the world; this book about Heaven. He loved hearing stories from children especially when they were spiritually motivated. This book is no different.

His good friend and assistant Dee told him about a moment with her son regarding his memory of God and what came before he was born. That singular moment led to this compilation of stories of children from all over the world as their parents/grandparents recall similar moments of child-inspired insight.

This book is a joyous celebration of the innocence and mystery of life. If you as a reader are looking for documented-factually tested scientific proof of an existence beyond this life, you will have to look elsewhere. If you already believe that there is existence prior and after this life, this book is a wonderful collection from people all over the world sharing their experiences.

The stories are arranged in chapters such as Memories of Heaven, Memories of Choosing Parents, Memories of Family Reincarnations and Role Reversals, Memories of Spiritual Connections to Our Source, Mystical and Precognitive Wisdom, Invisible Friends and Spiritual Visitations, and Angel Stories.

At the beginning of each chapter Wayne writes an introduction and anecdote that relates to that chapter. To read of the sincerity of these children is a precious gift for those needing to hear these heartfelt stories. It is a way to lighten the hearts of adults and give them that pause to feel the love and light from a child’s heart. Wayne urges all adults to look at children as “spiritual beings” not merely inexperienced humans. No one can claim to have more wisdom simply because of a chronological age and that “wizened” adults can learn much from the innocence of unfiltered youth. If everyone were to reclaim their non-judgmental innocence that we had as children and to return to the loving light that is childhood this world would be better for us all. Sometimes the immaturity of youth teaches so much more than the hardness of age.

On August 30, 2015 Dr. Wayne Dyer had a heart attack during his sleep. His legacy lives on by all the teachings and ponderings he has left for the world to read. To learn more about this magnificent man, please visit his website at: http://www.drwaynedyer.com/

ENDURING AND ABSOLUTELY TIMELESS
By Robert Steven Thomas
I truly miss the late Wayne Dyer. The world has lost a remarkable soul and teacher. I read his first book ("Your Erroneous Zones") as a young man in the seventies and can, with complete conviction, say it helped me mature faster and become a better person. I also own and have read almost all of the books he has published after his first. Throughout his early years Dyer was a successful psychologist whose main emphasis included getting people to understand that one of life's greatest challenges is to personally accept responsibility for your circumstance in life. (if your life is gonna get better ... it's up to you to change ... and you need to own the problem's causes yourself!) During his last two decades Dyer studied the world's greatest philosophers ... and in the process became one himself. This book is consistent with Dyer's thinking, but deals with an entirely different subject ... the realistic potential of a sentient afterlife through the lucid, inner-eyes of many children's earliest memories. In his uniquely characteristic style Dyer has approached this subject through modern logic, reasoning and has skipped most of the metaphysical hyperbole. This book and its thinking is a fitting conclusion for one of the world's great masters. The collaboration with Dee Garnes is also very helpful.

If you felt the need to read the reviews you need to read this book.
By Falconbrother
I couldn't avoid having high expectations from this book. I will say that it has met my expectations, and then some. As I read it I felt transported to another place, another time. I started out skeptical of Wayne Dyer but, over time he won me over. I will miss him.

Combine the ages of these children, the geographic dispersion of their locations, the similarities in their stories and it's good evidence.
