Natasha's book is informative, well researched and transparent about her own bipolar and depressive disorder. She provides plenty of links to her research, explains the symptoms of each condition and discusses the manifestations of her own symptoms, leaving room for the individual experiences of those of us whose experience with these illnesses have taken a slightly different turn. Natasha also provides management and coping skills in clear ways to us and those of our family in ways that help us communicate about it perhaps for the first time. I highly recommend this book to those living with bipolar and depressive disorder, and to those family members of those coping with these disorders.

A Rare Book

Thank Heaven. As patients and loved ones, we are ill-served by our choices in reading material. Books that delve into the clinical and scientific and recovery issues from the viewpoint of the patient who has experienced it all are in extremely short supply. Unless we become our own experts, recovery is going to be extremely problematic. Accordingly, we need to be jumping for joy over the publication of Natasha Tracy's Lost Marbles.

Natasha takes you by the hand and walks you through the bipolar experience every step of the way - from unusual behaviors that set off alarms to the trauma of a crisis to the shock of receiving a diagnosis to the long hard road in reclaiming your life. Eventually, as you acquire your own insight and wisdom, you will be able to let go of Natasha's hand. You're in charge, now.

One example: We're used to hearing about meds from a doctor's perspective or from disgruntled patients with an anti-meds axe to grind. What is lacking is the viewpoint of someone who has come to terms with the reality that meds will remain a constant in her life. Once again, Natasha is walking you through the process. Some of you may feel that her analysis could have benefited from a more critical look at this topic, but here is the bottom line: Natasha genuinely cares about her readers. Bipolar is an illness that takes no prisoners. We have the right to make our own choices, but they need to be informed choices. In the case of meds, the more you know about them, the better they will work for you. At last, someone amongst us has taken the trouble to lay it out for us.

The meds part of her book will probably grab all the attention. What I find more important is her insights from having lived inside her own brain for the last 18 or so years as a bipolar patient. Doctors aren't equipped to write this stuff. Natasha is. We badly need more Natasha's.

Excellent Read - Very Accurate

Fantastic read. As I also live with treatment-resistant bipolar 1, I can attest that Natasha's account is accurate. Her honesty is refreshing having dealt with Doctor's that made me feel like I failed when treatments didn't work. Thank you for the honesty, Natasha. Thank you for taking the time and having the presence of mind to see the illness for what it is, and to being committed to living as fully as possible. I have read the ebook but will be purchasing a hard copy to share with my family.

Okay, in theory i like the books. I've read all three of them by now in the span of a week. My opinion, no offense to the author, is that all these books are so similar. All 3 brothers have EXACTLY the same personality when you read EACH book. In Jarret's book i thought "Oh, Jonathan is the lighthearted one" Than reading Jonathan's book, his attitude, personality etc was exactly like Jarret's and than again the same thing with Jordan's book.

Author had a hard time separating the characters, i felt they were all the same personality with different names and different women under a title with a different book. Thats why i didn't like this series or the way the author wrote. And i read a LOT of books, so I've seen so many different writing styles. Mortimer was not one of my favored as she tended to use inappropriate description in random scenes. They could be talking about curtains and he would have said something "with an edge" "rasped" "bit out angrily"...i don't understand why in a casual conversation they would suddenly be angry. Random crap like that set me off this book.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, its lacking in structure, men lack personality, its really not that romantic, format need A LOT of work, lacks the "flow" of a good book and you finish each story unsatisfied, uninspired and uninterested. I literally had to drag myself to finish this series. Anyway i would love to hear someone else's interpretation of the book.

Yeah, I agree it is good. But I am trying to find her first 50 books, from way back in the 80s. Now THOSE were good! I wonder what happened? I think she was in a bad relationship, and now writes in a more fairy-tale vein.

This book is, I believe, the best of "Bachelor & Brother" Series. I fall in love with Hunter Brothers. But what about Prince Brothers? I also want to read about Nik, Zak & Rick? Are we going to read their stories? You can't be this cruel, can you, Ms. Mortimer?

Easy to understand history at a glance!

Many people are interested in history, but find their own history to be much more transparent than other parts of the globe. This is reinforced by a school system that, in North America, concentrates on European and American history, ignoring two-thirds of the world.

I will soon be teaching history to a new generation of students, and I can tell you: it doesn't get much easier when you study more. History students often end up knowing a patchwork - vast amounts of information about Europe or China, but very little about other important areas such as India or Africa, and with very little idea of what was going on in China at the time of Rome, or vice versa.

John Haywood's 'Atlas of World History' is just the book you need to fix this problem.

Large, beautifully clear maps occupy every inch of this book, with timelines and summaries around them to give readers a brief overview of the period in question. Every chapter of world history is summarized with a world map that quite clearly shows states and tribes around the world, giving one a breathtaking hint to what was going on. Other maps - the majority - concentrate on a particular period of time in a particular part of the world. Europe still gets more attention than other regions, but this is almost unavoidable in history - there is just so much information available! However, other parts of the world can come to startling life in front of you, making the history of India, China or Africa into digestable, comfortable chunks easy to understand.

The only downside to this magnificent book is that it is only a summary. To understand history in depth, you need something that has focus, not breadth. But to understand history as a whole, this book is indispensable.

It is a rare treasure that I hope you enjoy as much as I do - although the book is slightly outdated now, it continues to outclass newer versions by other publishers, and will always occupy a special spot on my bookcase.

This Atlas Kicks ... !

I wanted to buy the best atlas of world history so I went to the library and looked through the top 3 atlases, namely Times/Hammond, Oxford, and DK. DK was clearly the nicest and most elegant of them, but contained little text and had lots of world maps in places where it should have had detailed close up maps of the regions. I eventually chose Hammond 5th edition, the most expensive of them all, and ordered it. Then in a local bookstore I found this book and because of its low cost I said "what the heck" and bought it. I am glad I did because in my opinion it is better than all the rest including Hammond. Whenever I want to look something up I go to this book first. When comparing the same events in this book and Hammond, I find that in many cases (but not all) this book provides a better and more detailed explanation.
This book is amazingly well organized. Each chapter starts with about 5 world maps spanning hundreads of years. (hammond doesn't have this). Followed by nice and detailed maps of each region. Color is used very well. The maps are mostly the same size so you can easily compare them and visually assimilate the information better. Each map has a timeline and a list of about 7 key events/battles that happened during that time.
The quality of this book matches or exceeds the quality of the major atlases. You do not need a better general world history atlas book than this. And the fact that the price is so low, gives you no reason not to buy this book. Goto the library/bookstore and compare the atlases, and you'll see this one is good enough for all your needs.

INDISPENSABLE

Even if you are only slightly interested in Alfred Hitchcock you will find this book enjoyable reading just for the sheer variety of material culled from a 50+ year career. For students of Hitchcock's films this volume is quite indispensable, particularly the HITCHCOCK AT WORK section which includes a 22-page transcription of the director talking with his production manager about shooting STAGE FRIGHT and going over all the logistics of the film even before the screenplay was written. Unfortunately no excerpts from this are presented in Amazon's rather generous selection of preview pages, but have a look at Hitchcock's earliest writings in the preview to see the value of this volume, especially the short "Titles--Artistic and Otherwise" (p 71) or "How a Talking Film is Made" (p.73). The paperback edition I have is printed on sturdy, recycled paper and the binding looks like it will stand up to years of use--which is likely as this is really an indispensable reference book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We must rely on our own smarts

This helpful compendium opens up for both specialists and generalists this "difficult" writer's works. It encourages us to enter the discussion about them. My review sums up the contents of a compact but valuable resource. Given that the chronology of Pynchon's life and works by John M. Kraft must be far sketchier than that for perhaps any other living author, Kraft sensibly concludes after summing up what can be verified: "We hardly need to know the life to appreciate the works."

As the introduction by editors Inger H. Dalsgaard, Luc Herman, and Brian McHale reminds us, their "Pyndustry" formed to dissect Pynchon's fiction need not be as hermetic as it may seem to the outsider. "It is the sense of sharing in a collective enterprise of readers that transforms a cult of insiders into a community." With only his works to study, the author absent, we are "left to our own devices". This 2012 anthology aims at fellow academics, but it provides a more accessible guide to the canon, poetics, and issues than monographs devoted to recondite topics.

Part I surveys the canon. "Early Pynchon" by Herman examines the first stories and racial themes and revision in V. It's a limited look at that novel, but many contributors agree that Pynchon's 1963 full-length debut represents but a frenetic trial run for the two "masterpieces" that would follow.

Although dismissed by the author as a misfire, his first, The Crying of Lot 49, appears alongside Vineland and Inherent Vice as a California novel. (Pynchon's newest, Bleeding Edge, reviewed by me on its appearance Sept. 17, 2013, burrows into congenial tales of attempts to break out of the "meatworld" and the crackdown that follows not only a counterculture but the start-ups. Bleeding Edge draws Pynchon back from his adopted Golden State to his native New York, but post-9/11, it entangles wired technology hatched and incubated in Silicon Valley.) Thomas Hill Schaub locates "New Age libertarianism" rather than "liberal pluralism" as the Californian novels' political stance. He tracks the "consensus" for the 1964-71 period they evoke. Lot 49 traces a "secret withdrawal" from conformity, appearing in 1966’s flower-power promise. The other two novels track state backlash, and from the rueful benefit of hindsight, they from their publication in respectively 1990 and 2009 lament the passing of communal alternatives and individual initiative during the rise of Nixon and Reagan, as sinister forces regroup to compromise or marginalize those who tried to fight the power.

Gravity's Rainbow is rooted in Pynchon's service to this same state, in his 1960-62 career as a technical writer in Seattle at Boeing. Steven Weisenburger documents Pynchon's role in the bureaucratic complicity that enables the military and such corporations to ally with global economies and murderous technology. Rocket World's domination, in Pynchon's 1973 indictment of mass death, proves how the post-war national security state follows the Second World War's operations, carried out by a "Power Elite's relentless sovereignty". Ethical or practical resistance by a few may be admirable, but given the fate of many in Gravity's Rainbow it appears such stances remain quixotic.

Certainly Mason & Dixon plots this tension between rationalization and imagination, the little guy versus the big picture. This relentless push of modernization and profit, as America championed in colonial times, captures a period which changed "all from subjunctive to declarative, reducing Possibilities to Simplicities that serve the ends of Governments". Such an eighteenth-century style and orthography of this 1997 epic enlivens Pynchon's exploration of another historical epoch. While less immediate than the mid-twentieth century, Kathryn Hume explains, this period also pits protagonists against a world-system of intricate "lines" laid down by mathematicians and surveyors to extend imperialist ambitions. Slavery, mystery, and science contend. Layers and networks, typical elements of Pynchon's fiction, give clues and orient or disorient readers within such complex webs.

Widening the rampage of overlying overlords in Against the Day to roam thirty years around the turn of the last century, the pre-WWI foundation for that similarly immense 2009 send-up of early twentieth-century literary genres defines Menippean satire. Bernard Duyfhuizen tallies 170 characters and at least a dozen pastiches of fictional categories in its sprawl. Its "dime novel" elements involving silent-era film in Los Angeles, as this critic astutely cites, anticipate the cinematic hard-boiled patter and louche gumshoe satire of Inherent Vice set fifty years later on the coast near that same city. They also, typical for Pynchon as his novels unfolded, overlap, as the Traverse family introduced in Vineland edges Against the Day into an earlier work as published, even as it hints ahead via its anarchistic struggles to hippie reactions against capitalism in the California novels, chronologically.

After overviews of the major texts, Part II elucidates poetics. David Cowart's investigation of literary history enlivens the author's promise. "Pynchon seduces the reader with something like the big picture: read this and you'll understand the age and its enormities." Cowart wonders if Pynchon leads the way in innovation, away from modernist tropes, or whether he responds to endemic cultural trends. The evidence marshaled favors Pynchon as leading the way, although Cowart appears to strain credulity when attempting to attribute prescience to the appearance of Pynchon's novels within years or stages of political upheaval or social unrest. What seems more convincing is that by Vineland the quest narrative--however unfulfilled--in his previous novels diminishes amid "increasing difficulty". Pynchon while lightening his tone and intensity somewhat by the 1990s intensifies his range. His target widens as his novels grow encyclopedic. Melville created one such narrative; Pynchon, many.

Delving into theory, the following essays prefer a more professorial, less playful stance. McHale sums up postmodernism adroitly. He links Christopher Jencks' "double-coding" within architectural designs winking at those in the know while delighting or puzzling the general public to Pynchon's blend of high-art themes and pop-culture references. McHale argues that postmodern ontology, a concern with being, replaces the modernist search for epistemology, to address meaning. Cowart concurs that the early quests of V. and Lot 49 have disintegrated by Gravity's Rainbow; that work ends with explosions, dispersions, and reversions. Erasures, forking paths, nesting, layers all fool characters--and any who attempt to navigate and master the labyrinth.

Pynchon's intertexts, as David Seed charts, exhibit their own twists and turns. Characters and themes start to blur and shape-shift. The final essays gathered in Part III under Issues can drift into their own hermetic recesses. Sometimes theory overwhelms the application to specific passages in the texts. If a chapter on humor, which gains all but five citations in the index, might have substituted or supplemented this section, its inclusion would have leavened the seriousness of this section. Pynchon's wordplay, songs, and slang, and his inherent vice that drives him to keep his awful or sly punchlines coming do not earn the depth they deserve here. Amy J. Elias for history, Jeff Baker for politics, Deborah L. Madsen for alterity, and Dalsgaard for science and technology, all the same, offer directions to suggest deeper pursuits for these respectable topics.

In a coda of "how to read Pynchon", Hanjo Berressem notes how readers responded critically during each stage of Pynchon's trajectory. The prophet of doom and miscommunication appeared ready for the Space Age amidst its countercultural flight from the threats "slouching towards universal disorder, heat-death, noise and, ultimately, to near-static". The post-structuralist craze found deconstructionists thrilled with a "violently centripetal" lurch into futility, disorder, and self-referential metafiction.

By the 1990s, the changes during the Reagan administration may have tempered such critical frenzy. Pynchon's sensitivity to the realities of contemporary life, beyond satire, puns, puzzles, and irony, turned some to reconsider the aesthetic arguments within his novels. The progression in the humanities over the next fifteen years towards New Historicism placed Pynchon's fiction within the "complete counter-history of America" in its mission to (as Mason and Dixon dramatizes) "save the realm of the fictional from the forces of relentless factualization and rationalization".

Some critics here propose that reading Pynchon, we can follow his example to challenge the system that supplants our initiative with a perpetual commodification of our dreams and desires for fulfillment. Bleeding Edge continues this critique, but it too shrinks back from any clear resolution of its own shaggy-dog plot. Those who seek in Pynchon's passages an escape from their mundane concerns may find that the paths fork and bend back into our own reality with its often elusive lack of lasting satisfaction. Like his protagonists, Pynchon appears to remind us, in his absence from advising us, that we must rely on our own smarts, arrayed against mystery and cynicism and corruption. As the editors of "A Cambridge Companion to Thomas Pynchon" conclude in their collective, even utopian, ambition to scope out this reclusive writer's ascent and flight patterns: "We are all in this together."

A book filled with plans for small hands-on wooden machines

This is a book filled with projects for machines that are fun to play with. Over the years I have built more than half of them. (And given them all away as Christmas presents.) The machines are unique and really fun to watch work. A relatively high level of woodworking skill is required.

I ordered this book for my dad last Christmas, and he has used all of the patterns at least once. He is constantly telling me how well-planned the book is. I'm not a woodworker, but my dad is, and he rates this book top notch!

excellent patterns for great models

I bought this book back in 1991 when it was new......and it set on my shelf for 17 years. In 2008, I made my first model...the wooden u-joint model. In the last few months I have made 6 more models. I have only had minor problems with a couple of patterns. The back plate patterns on a couple of models are very hard to follow...because he advocates making a jig......which is ok......except his jig is not the same size as the back plate......a minor issue.

I would rate myself an advanced woodworker with a full shop of tools.......and would rate these patterns challenging....but fun. My fellow engineers at work love playing with my finished models. They also would make great presents for the grand children.

Trevor Kletz, OBE, D.Sc., F.Eng., a process safety consultant, has published more than a hundred papers and nine books on loss prevention and process safety, including most recently Lessons From Disaster: How Organizations Have No Memory and Accidents Recur and Computer Control and Human Error. His experience includes thirty-eight years with Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., where he served as a production manager and safety adviser in the petrochemical division, and membership in the department of chemical engineering at Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England. He is currently senior visiting research fellow at Loughborough University and an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Itemized Case History of Accidents in the Chemical Industry

What I like most about this book is its index and table of contents. It is easy to find a type of accident. For example, when I turned to page 291, I found an exact, simple description of the dangers resulting from the flow of a non-conducting liquid, i.e., one with a low dielectric constant --- like toluene (2.4 compared to water with a constant of 80). "The danger is that a spark could discharge between a body of liquid and grounded metal." In other words, a high voltage shock will knock you off your feet.

This is an easy-to-read text and should be required reading for all chemical engineers entering the workforce. After you read it, you can move on to more detailed engineering text on the subject of safety such as Kletz's own book, or Mark Tweeddale, or Crowl and Louvar's text. The standard in process safety incident case reviews.

We have made this book part of a required reading program for all engineers, as part of our company's process safety program. Anyone involved in chemical or petroleum operations, will benefit greatly from the wisdom that can be gained by learning from other's mistakes. As my old boss used to say, "You can accumulate about 50 years of knowledge in your work life-time. What you need is 100 years of wisdom." By reading this book you can accumulate 100 years of wisdom. The book is a collection of short summaries arranged by topic. This allows for easy short term reading periods appropriate for training classes or casual reading.
