About the Author
Chris Lubkemann is the author of four other best-selling whittling books from Fox Chapel Publishing: "The Little Book Of Whittling"", ""Big Book Of Whittle Fun, Whittling Twigs & Branches", and "Tree Craft". A child of missionaries, Chris Lubkemann grew up in the forests of Brazil and Peru, where he developed an appreciation for knives and entertained himself--and others--by handcrafting rafts, tree houses, traps, and slingshots from scrap wood. Since that time, he has continued to integrate his woodworking skills with good old-fashioned fun. Chris has carved some of the world's smallest branch carvings, and his smallest branch rooster was given a Guinness World Record Certificate. Chris currently demonstrates whittling as the resident woodcarver at the Amish Farm and House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

I have ALL of Chris' wonderful whittling books

I have ALL of Chris' wonderful whittling books, & will buy any more he releases. I've been strictly a pocketknife whittler since 1994, so I'm no "newbie" as you hip, young, whipper snappers so eloquently call it. LOL! I can vouch for the great projects & information you'll get from this, or any of his other books. If you want to truly learn to do old fashioned, REAL whittling, & not what edges somewhere between whittling & traditional woodcarving with the gouges, chisels, etc., then you will never do better than to buy Chris' books. Ok. now where'd I put my Swiss army tinker & that tree branch???. Happy whittlin' all. :)

Stef Penney: You have created a tapestry of interlocking characters who all work in law enforcement in Dublin, and so far you’ve turned the spotlight on three different police officers. . . Do you have a favorite? Have you found some harder to inhabit than others?

Tana French: Frank Mackey in Faithful Place was by far the most fun to write because he’s got that dark, abrasive Dublin sense of humor that surfaces even--or especially--at life’s worst moments. The hardest to get into was Scorcher Kennedy, in my new book, Broken Harbour--I’ve just finished the edits. I think it’s to do with the gap between the way Frank saw him in Faithful Place, where he was a supporting character, and the way he sees himself. Frank sees a rule-bound, up-himself, irritating git; but from Scorcher’s point of view, he’s a man struggling desperately to do the right thing in a world where you have to trust in the rules because your own mind is too fragile and slippery to trust. There’s a huge gap between the two perspectives, and it wasn’t easy to switch. That perspective shift is one of the things I enjoy most about writing a series of books, where a secondary character in one book becomes the narrator in the next--it lets me explore the way truth can be mutable and subjective, shaped by people’s own needs as much as by objective reality--but it’s also the toughest part of it.

Penney: You’re known for writing about Dublin. Can you see yourself going anywhere else as the setting for a book?

French: I’ll be sticking with Dublin--for the foreseeable future, anyway. It’s the only city where I know all the little details--the sense of humor, the connotations of the accents, where to get a good pint and where not to go after dark. Setting a book in a place I didn’t know this intimately would feel very dislocated. I think crime is very deeply rooted in its setting--it happens everywhere but the form it takes is shaped by the fears and desires of the society where it happens--and so crime novels are rooted in setting, too. Both In the Woods and The Likeness deal with the relationship between past and present--how to balance the two without destroying either--and that’s a question that Ireland’s been struggling (and often failing) to deal with over the past twenty years. It wasn’t a deliberate choice to make the books “relevant”; it’s just that since the issue was a central part of the world I lived in while I was coming up with the books, it soaked into them. If I set a book anywhere else, that connection wouldn’t be there. Plus, I love Dublin. I care about its fears and desires with a passion that I don’t feel for any other place. Faithful Place, especially, is a love song to Dublin, its bad side as well as its good. I can’t imagine writing about somewhere I don’t care about so strongly.

Penney: The Mackeys in Faithful Place are extraordinarily vivid, but it’s a terrifying, bleak portrait of family life. Does this relate to anything in your life? Or, if not, what made you interested in writing about such a family?

French: Thank God, my family’s nothing like the Mackeys! I had an unfashionably happy childhood. But I’ve always been most interested in writing about things I don’t know about. That’s at the heart of Faithful Place, in a lot of ways. It’s about a big family, and a viciously dysfunctional one, neither of which I’ve experienced. And it’s also about a family that’s very deeply rooted in Dublin, and specifically in the centuries-old community of Faithful Place. Those roots have shaped everything the Mackeys are. I’ve always been fascinated by that kind of rooted life because it’s something I’ll never have--my parents have a handful of nationalities between them, I grew up in several continents, I’m an international brat. . . Writing about something so far from my own life is the closest I’ll ever come to understanding it.

Penney: Down to nuts and bolts: How do you write? Are you very disciplined? I imagine you must be since you’re quite prolific!

French: Hah, I wish. I’m not one of nature’s disciplined types. Back in college, I had a reputation for going into the library only to convince other people to come out for coffee, and I haven’t changed that much. Every morning, I fight the urge to call my friends and see if I can persuade anyone to come out and play. These days, though, my disciplined side almost always wins. I work six days a week, about seven hours a day. What makes the difference is that I love what I do and I feel ridiculously lucky to be doing it. After years of acting, where you’re dependent on other people to decide whether you’re allowed to work or not, being able to work every day feels like a massive gift. That considerably lessens the urge to goof off.

Penney: Any TV or film adaptations in the works? Because there should be! If yes, how did you find the experience?

French: Paramount has optioned The Likeness and In the Woods, and I’ve just heard that Likeness is in development. I’m not totally clear on exactly what that means, but it sounds very cool but slightly intimidating. I’m dying to see what comes out at the other end, but I deliberately didn’t even try to ask for any role in the adaptation process because anything I know about writing fiction is probably worthless when it comes to writing film. They’re such utterly different genres that the book’s going to have to change in ways I can’t begin to picture.

Penney: I loved the mythic quality of the backstory in In the Woods--and the fact that in the end you refused to answer the question. Did you encounter any resistance from publishers over the ending?

French: No resistance from publishers. I was expecting it, because the ending does break genre convention--I was all ready to argue my case that this was the only ending with integrity and anything else would be forced and artificial, sacrificing character truth for cheap closure. But none of the editors ever suggested changing it. I do get e-mails from readers who hate the ending. Fair enough; the genre comes with expectation of closure and the book doesn’t provide it, and some people have real trouble with that. But I also get e-mails from readers who love the ending and who would have been furious if I’d sacrificed that integrity in order to stick to the rules. There was no way I could have written something that would make both types of readers happy. All I could do was write the best book I could and hope there were enough people out there who like the same kind of thing that I do.

Wow!

I am not sure what I can say that will not be a spoiler. So I'll just tell you, it's so much more than you think.

This is not my normal type of read, but the blurb grabbed my attention, and boy am I glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.

This is a story of a very bad boy doing very bad things. It is a short read that really has enough that you walk away feeling satisfied. If you are looking for a HEA, you've come to the wrong place, but I am happy that I took this ride.

Excellent Gay Erotica - My New Fave By This Author

I’m not really sure where to begin with this review. The story is short so saying too much will give it away. I will start by saying that I’ve read everything Devon McCormack has written to date and I’ve loved them all. However, Cheating Bastard quickly jumped to the top as my favorite of his. I’m not a big fan of cheating in books unless the books are pure erotica. If there’s a real romance, usually shy away. Cheating Bastard would never be considered a romance, so it was perfect.

Don’t go into this expecting anything more than it is. The title is Cheating Bastard for a reason. The entire story is centered around a cheating main character.

With that being said –

Blake (said cheating bastard) has been with Todd for a few years. When Blake found out he had cancer, Todd stayed by his side and supported him through it all. I adored Todd from the first page. In the months since the treatment ended, Blake has made one excuse after another on why he won’t have sex with Todd. Todd has tried everything, but Blake says he’s not ready.

Blake’s ‘not ready’ because he’s getting it from every man he can – outside of Todd, that is. He’s not just getting it from others, he’s taking chances that most cheating bastards wouldn’t take. He brings his tricks home to the bed he shares with Todd and will have sex with them until literally minutes before Todd is due to arrive home. It’s a big thrill. But Todd isn’t allowed to step outside of the relationship. The thought of that makes Blake furious, to put it mildly. Blake is convinced that won’t happen anyway, so he doesn’t give much thought to it. He doesn’t have a good opinion of Todd, though he claims to love him.

Eager for intimacy with his boyfriend again, Todd suggests a threesome. Yeah, not the smartest plan in the world, but he’s pretty desperate. It doesn’t take long for Blake to jump right into the threesome idea and he knows the perfect guy to bring into their bed, a guy named Kyle. Kyle is one of Blake’s regular f*ck buddies and his favorite, so why not?

The ‘date’ is set up and Kyle is brought into Blake and Todd’s bed.

I can’t say more than that or I’ll give too much away. Suffice it to say that things don’t go exactly as planned for any of the parties involved.

Cheating Bastard is told in alternating points of view, which I really loved. The reader is taken inside the heads of Blake, Todd and even Kyle. You’re able to get invested in each character before the finale. You know their thoughts and plans long before everything comes to a head, so to speak.

The sex is hot (don’t expect a lot of lube and prep… just sayin’). The reader is able to see Blake’s conquests and is also taken inside the bedroom when Kyle comes to play.

Great story. I’ve always been a big fan of this author, but this story definitely sealed it. Not many can cover a story like this in so few pages and get it right. It was definitely done right in Cheating Bastard, in my opinion. You will hate Blake with every fiber of your being and you’ll adore Todd and Kyle. Like I’ve said in other reviews of Devon McCormack’s work, you might think you’ll know what’s going to happen, but I can assure you that you’ll be wrong.

I loved the ending. Others might not, but I thought it was perfect.

Where do I start?!

I love how Devon's brain works, well was working until I got almost to the end. The writing was great! The story flowed very smoothly. I wanted to wrap Todd up and take him away and find him a better boyfriend. I felt bad for Kyle just as much. That flippant butt muncher that claimed to "love" Todd needs to be in another book and get his butt tore up in prison!!! Yes I was left in a prissy mood at Blake! I hate him with the biggest passion I have ever hated a character ever!

I can't wait to get my hands on more of Devon's work!! Absolutely love that I found him through another friend! I love how different this story was. It added some spice to my usual type of books. I love having a book like this to squeeze in to re-freshen my mind before tackling a longer book. Way to go Devon!!

Miriam Solomon argues that the familiar dichotomy between the art and the science of medicine is not adequate for understanding this plurality of methods. The book begins by tracing the development of medical consensus conferences, from their beginning at the United States' National Institutes of Health in 1977, to their widespread adoption in national and international contexts. It discusses consensus conferences as social epistemic institutions designed to embody democracy and achieve objectivity. Evidence-based medicine, which developed next, ranks expert consensus at the bottom of the evidence hierarchy, thus challenging the authority of consensus conferences. Evidence-based medicine has transformed both medical research and clinical medicine in many positive ways, but it has also been accused of creating an intellectual hegemony that has marginalized crucial stages of scientific research, particularly scientific discovery. Translational medicine is understood as a response to the shortfalls of both consensus conferences and evidence-based medicine. Narrative medicine is the most prominent recent development in the medical humanities. Its central claim is that attention to narrative is essential for patient care. Solomon argues that the differences between narrative medicine and the other methods have been exaggerated, and offers a pluralistic account of how the all the methods interact and sometimes conflict. The result is both practical and theoretical suggestions for how to improve medical knowledge and understand medical controversies.

Miriam Solomon, Temple University

Her first book was Social Empiricism (MIT Press, 2001) and she is the author of many articles in philosophy of medicine, philosophy of science, gender and science, epistemology and bioethics. She is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Pretty good - found a typo

It is a good book, very helpful. I don't think you can implement this any other way other than getting this book. Google fails, book wins.

Watch typo on page 134-135. They have Period and Unit parameters reversed in this section.

This is one of the best technical (PKI or non PKI) books I layed my hands on

1- it is straight to the point, no sales kind of talk
2- it is very practical, you can apply almost verything in it, from troubleshooting, to upgrading etc.
3- it is very detailed (in PKI, details do matter)
4- it is comprehensive

Best reference for Windows PKI

This book is a significant and very worthwhile update on the 2003 version. The new edition is considerably larger than the previous one and covers the new features of Windows Server 2008 PKI including the new Advanced Cryptography Support (Suite B), OCSP and SCEP (among others).
The book also includes details of the Microsoft Certificate Lifecycle Manager (CLM/ILM 2007) product.
This book is the best reference for Windows PKI.
