Manchurian Legacy: Memoirs of a Japanese Colonist, by Kazuko Kuramoto

Kazuko Kuramoto was born and raised in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1927, at the peak of Japanese expansionism in Asia. Dairen (Port Arthur) was an important colonial outpost on the Liaotung Peninsula; the train lines established by Russia and taken over by the Japanese, ended there. When Kuramoto's grandfather arrived in Dairen as a member of the Japanese police force shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the family's belief in Japanese supremacy and its "divine" mission to "save" Asia from Western imperialists was firmly in place. As a third-generation colonist, the seventeen-year-old Kuramoto readily joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps in 1944 to aid in the war effort and in her country's sacred cause. A year later, her family listened to the emperor's radio broadcast ". . . we shall have to endure the unendurable, to suffer the insufferable . . . unconditional surrender."

Manchurian Legacy is the story of the family's life in Dairen, their survival as a forgotten people during the battle to reclaim Manchuria waged by Russia, China, and Korea, and their subsequent repatriation to a devastated Japan. Kuramoto describes a culture based on the unthinking oppression of the colonized by the colonizer. And, because Manchuria was, in essence, a Japanese frontier, the Kuramotos lived a freer and more luxurious life than they would have in Japan-one relatively unscathed by the war until after the surrender.

As a commentator Kuramoto explores her culture both from the inside, subjectively, and from the outside, objectively. Her memoirs describe her coming of age in a colonial society, her family's experiences in war-torn Manchuria, and her "homecoming" to Japan-where she had never been-just as Japan is engaged in its own cultural upheaval.

A precious memoir, recording the end of an era.
By J. Wu
As a native Dalianian, when I heard of this book, I felt this is the one I have long been looking for, the real story about my hometown.
Born in one of its suburban counties, I moved to the City of Dalian at the age of eight in the 70's, though had travelled through it on my way to Beijing every year before. It's a unique city, different from any other one in China. Its European style architectures, its numerous public plazas, connected by tree-lined boulevards, all are such a contrast with a typical Chinese city, whether it's Shanghai, Beijing, or Canton. And the aroma of acacia filled the streets in early summer.
Why is it so different. It's all owing to its colonial past. However, the Japanese colonists, who were central to its birth and rise, by then were all long gone. In the school, what we learned were just how bad Japanese colonists were. The official narratives were, they were all beasts and criminals, greedy rapists, and only after they were rid of the city got its life. However, little by little, I found out it's not the whole story, not even twenty percent true.
This memoir, from a young Japanese Dalian native's perspective, recorded her last three years in Dalian. The end of the war, the Soviet invasion, the chaos, the famine, the struggle to survive and final repatriation, or rather the exile, to Japan. This book might be the first in its kind. With the old Japanese Dairenians diminishing every day, and this part of history still a taboo in China, and forgotten in the West, this may well be the last.
I do recommend my fellow Dalianians to read this book, to learn about our hometown's real story, not be blinded by the ultra-nationalism which dominates people's mindset in China.
On the other hand, I do wish the author could have provided more details, especially on the interactions between different ethnic groups in the city.

Intelligent, moving memoir full of history
By Dalcassian
The life and times of Manchuria and Japan from the pre-war to post-war eras are made physically and emotionally real in one person's memory of life and love and loss. This book is not a literary masterpiece but as a memoir, a history, and a slice of human experience it is strikingly good. At its best, Ms. Kuramoto's book is similar to or even better than "Gone With the Wind" as a tale of a uniquely determined woman survivor on the defeated and wrong side of a war, in this case World War II. But in Ms. Kuramoto's case, it is also of someone who is more aware than were the real Margaret Mitchell and her fictional heroine Scarlett O'Hara that her own side was that of an oppressor. And even at its worst, the book still holds up at a level equal to penetrating journalism and biography.

Criticisms and weaknesses: I am perhaps overemphasizing the downside at this point to detail some issues that a reader may find off-putting or disappointing. For example many interesting details from the author's childhood (e.g., interest in ballet, episodes in school) are only told after she is an adult and while she is remembering them during her adult period instead of giving us a full picture of them during the childhood part of her story. There is also not a lot of interpersonal dramatic tension in the narrative's style even though after she settles in Japan following the family's expulsion from Manchuria she faces social and economic deprivation, deep moral compromises, tense reunions, family alienation, bigotry, and abusive personalities. The story is a little too blandly told just at the point we can really get a "Gone With the Wind" sweep. There are also minor odd turns of phrase that sound like leftovers from English as a second (actually third for the author) language, or are simply bad edits. In general, though, her use of language -- English -- is mostly clear and compelling.)

Finally, on the more profound downside is a recurring sense that despite her intellectual realization of Japan's abusive rule in China (of which her father was a part despite being a decent and kind person in his own sphere, and respectful of the local Chinese), nevertheless the author did and does emotionally look down on the Chinese, and deeply resents their takeover of the place of her idyllic childhood. To a degree some of that emotion is understandable because expelling the Japanese of Manchuria, innocent and guilty, young and old, native and colonist may have amounted to one revenge too far. And worse, the direct terror and violence the Japanese settlers experienced from the newly liberated Chinese - and the author's family especially - was quite brutal. ("Colonist" in the title may contain a bit of willful irony as Manchuria was her only known home.)

The sense of a continued anger and even condescension towards the Chinese from the author is supported in an episode just before she and her family leave Manchuria In that episode, the author's anger causes her to snarl contemptuously at a Chinese customer to the point that he in turn unjustifiedly slaps her, while somewhat justifiably also calling her a Japanese snob b*tch. Her narrative shows no regret then or now at her own admitted provocative rudeness. Also, interestingly, she never apparently has tried to go back to the hometown of Dairen in Manchuria though the doors have been wide open for decades.

The above critical thoughts are ponderings that arise from the fact that this book is a profound and eminently readable one that makes you think and feel and learn, and do not detract from the book's powerful value as a collection of eye-opening and historically important memories.

Ms. Kuramoto's memoir should be assigned in schools in subject areas ranging from literature to history to anthropology/sociology. It also should be read by anyone looking to capture, and be captured by, the different experiences of human lives throughout this world, today and yesterday.

point of view of a Chinese raised in Hong Kong
By David T. Yu
How you react to this book depends on your ethnic background. I am a Chinese born during the Sino-Japanese war. My parents and their generation suffered immensely from the war, and some of them were burnt by personal experience under the Japanese occupation. There is a general anti-Japanese sentiment among them, which is being transmitted to the later generations. The current generation of Chinese are also greatly influenced by the anti-Japenese propaganda which are being viewed everyday in movies and TV series. In all these media, Chinese were depicted as courageous victims, and Japanese as brutal and somewhat inefficient invaders. This book allows us to see the world again from a different perspective. The author was one of the colonists in Japan-occupied Manchuria. She viewed Manchuko as much as a British would view Hong Kong at the height of the colony under British occupation. Just as the British at that time, she would view the Japanese occupiers as benefactors to the backward society of their Chinese citizens, upgrading their standard of living as well as education. This book is especially moving because the author also describes in very personal terms the changes of her feelings during the collapse of the Japanese empire, and her exodus to the U.S. She reminds us that each of us is an individual first, a nationalist second. This book would benefit all those who view themselves as being benevolent occupiers, as well as all those who consider themselves suffering from foreign intrusions.

GOLD. MUST-READ for all competitors.
By Wes (6WX)
His words resonate at a scary level. His paralleling early life and competitive struggles mirror my own almost too well, while giving insight into some of the cultural differences between our differing countries. I can hardly believe how well it applies to both competitions and unrelated real world experiences. If "Playing to Win" by David Sirlin is the fighting gamer's "bible", then "The Will to Keep Winning" is version 2.0, as if adding a 3rd Testament.

Do yourself a favor and read this book!

This work investigates ways of picturing and understanding dimensions below and above our own. What would a two-dimensional universe be like? How can we even attempt to picture objects of four, five or six dimensions? Such are the questions examined in this text.

Beyond the Third Dimension: Geometry, Computer Graphics, and Higher Dimensions (Scientific American Library Series)

Concise Well-Written And Beautifully Illustrated Work
By Rahman
Mathematical ideas, when first learned, tend to undergo a curious inner transformation. At the outset, some tangible representation is necessary to effectively latch onto the concept. Thereafter, the symbolic elaboration using the language of mathematics is sufficient to encompass not only that particular figure, but limitless others like it as well. The underlying geometry is still there, but there are simply too many possibilities to illustrate in any amount of time.
The first step of illustrating must be manifest, using ink or chalk or sand or digital pixels. In this way, even the finest geometric illustrations can be considered extremely crude and innacurate in comparison to rigorous mathematical precision. Consider, however, how extraordinarily difficult it would be to grasp trigonometric functions, vector spaces, or even the basic Cartesian coordinate system, without first observing supporting representative illustrations. Even if later forgotten, those initial images are crucial for understanding.
This work provides a wide range of richly color-illustrated examples of the abstract geometric structures dealt with regularly in mathematics and the sciences. It is unique in its quality and affordability, and is supported with excellent prose, briefly describing the developmental history, and frequently how to reconstruct the figures from a sparse handful of assumptions. From an introductory description of dimension, this book then branches into numerous and diverse major topics: scaling, slices, regular polytopes, perspective, coordinate geometry, and non-euclidean geometry. While sparing in its level of mathematical description and precision, it never diverges into a fully artistic exposition on the subjects either. There is a careful balance, to guide the reader into better understanding the particular system under discussion.
Certainly reading this book is merely the first step of a far longer term process. Symbolic computing programs, such as Mathematica, Maple or MatLab, will assist in visualization, as well as in understanding the pragmatic relation between the graphical and set-theoretic descriptions of the figures. Other books will also assist in this. Many of Rucker's works provide further descriptions of certain topics, specifically Geometry Relativity & The Fourth Dimension is admirable in its brevity and profundity. Abbott's classic Flatland is the foundational book on non-technical description of dimensions. The venerable What Is Mathematics? by Courant and Robbins combines illustration and mathematics as well as any work written since. Design science touches on these topics frequently as well, Kappraff's Connections is an extraordinary example of this. Deeper mathematical topics include set theory, algebraic groups, vector analysis, and too many others to list.
However abstract the concepts diagrams and illustrations in this book may seem initially, most if not all have been utilized for practical application in recent times. You may very well be using devices on a daily basis, which have these concepts as a basis for their functionality. Keep this in mind while reveling in what the individual imagination can conjure.

A book that helps us to leave the confines of 3 dimensions.
By A Customer
I am a high school mathematics teacher, and often students ask about the fourth dimension. Usually their question takes the form, "What is the fourth dimension?" or "How can we see things in the fourth dimension?" This book answers both questions very clearly. Relying mainly on superb computer graphics and analogies of a two-dimensional being trying to perceive the third dimesion (as in Flatland), the author helps us to understand the fourth and higher dimensions. He uses the techniques of slices, projections, shadows, and of course, generalization. I found the most practical part of the book was learning to count the number of faces, vertices, and edges in a 4 (and higher)-D hypercube and also the number of 4 (and higher)-D polytopes (analogues of Platonic solids in 3-D). I also found it valuable to learn the process of folding an unfolded hypercube through the fourth dimension, although I cannot visualize this process, being a mere 3-D creature. Experimental design models in various sciences can involve four or more dimensions. The example from paleoecology was very helpful in that it showed how we can take a 4-D model and take various 3-D cross sections to study various interactions of variables. This is an important concept for a research-bound high school student to learn. Martin Gardner has suggested that we read this book for the computer graphics alone, if for no other reason. Actually there is much more of value, although I found some parts repetitive and boring. The next time a student asks about the fourth dimension, I'll hand her/him the book and say, "Here, kid, go read.

From Publishers Weekly
In a voice often as powerful as the riveting gun he wielded in the 1970s and '80s in a Flint, Mich., General Motors assembly plant, Hamper nails down the excruciating boredom of a shoprat's life on the line. These roughly chronological essays, many published in the local press, bare the rage and humor that, with booze and drugs, friendships and enmities, served to speed along the timeclock's "suffocating minute hand." A fourth-generation factory worker, raised on hard music, hard liquor and soft drugs, given a parochial school education, Hamper was the eldest of eight children deserted by their father, supported by their mother. He was determined not to be an auto worker but soon after high school, married and a father, he needed the steady work GM offered. With free-ranging intelligence and a sharply anarchic sensibility, he tries to figure out and establish some control over his place in GM's massive corporate system. While these essays might best satisfy in small doses, Hamper, no longer a GM employee, writes with unrelenting energy. BOMC and QPB selections; film rights to Warner Bros.

From Library Journal
Hamper, a son, a grandson, and a great-grandson of General Motors' "shoprats," chronicles ten years spent in an abusive marriage with GM in Flint, Michigan. Despite exploitative management policies, arrogant and/or incompetent supervisors, and mind-numbing working conditions, Hamper, like the abused spouse who keeps returning to the abuser, becomes de pressed during layoffs and revives when recalled to the assembly line. Hamper copes with his perceived limited options by consuming impressive quantities of alcohol and writing an irreverent, cynically humorous column about shoprat life for an alternative newspaper. How much of Hamper's alienation and later panic disorder are the result of his ten years at GM and how much are due to genetics and choices is unexplored. Another weakness is Hamper's graceless style and his overuse of four-letter words. Despite these shortcomings, blue-collar voices are rarely heard, and therefore this is recommended for public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Based on his ``Rivethead'' column that has appeared in Midwest newspapers as well as in Mother Jones, here is Hamper's tortured description of his wretched career as a General Motors worker in the factories of Flint, Michigan. A fourth generation ``shoprat'' (one uncle spent 45 years at the Buick Engine Plant), Hamper explains how an irresponsible father, numerous siblings, and his own penchant for laziness, drugs, and taverns pointed directly to a future in the plants, despite his inclinations toward poetry and music. In 1977, he reluctantly began work in the cab shop (a place with a noise level ``like some hideous unrelenting tape loop of trains having sex''). Ranging from this experience to his retirement ten years later, Hamper writes of the drudgery of factory labor; repeated layoffs and call-backs; extensive on-the-job alcohol and drug consumption by himself and fellow workers; ongoing battles with foremen and supervisors; and his quest, similar to that of his mentor, Michael Moore, director of Roger and Me, to go bowling with GM chairman Roger Smith. His ``Rivethead'' series hardly endeared him to management, nor did his often obnoxious behavior. In 1986, at about the time his column first appeared in Mother Jones, he began to experience ``severe panic disorder,'' or anxiety attacks, and has spent the past few years in and out of a mental-health clinic. Although perceptively critical of American business management, practice, and values, Hamper nearsightedly finds little of worth or integrity in his fellow workers, and is downright offensive toward women, who, in his world, ``lust for summer sausage.'' Rivethead indeed. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Blue-collar worker
By Juanita Bradstreet
I would have to say the book was enjoyable, creative, but not intellectual by far. There was a lot of dry humor which I didn’t think was amusing and I thought it hindered the thought process of imagining the average blue collar worker. This book was written roughly about the 70’s and 80’s of a man who worked the assembly line for General Motor’s in Flint, Michigan. They called him “Rivethead” which suited his character.

I guess it’s hard for me to think that this person, Ben Hamper and others spent so much time mischievously causing chaos everyday they went to work without any concern about their job, co-workers or management. It was clear that Mr. Hamper’s ambitions went no further then quitting-time, whether it was 10 am, 1 pm, or 3pm. Him and his buddies would drink on the job, some did drugs and the management sometimes gave out warnings but mostly looked the other way because the workers would harassed them intensely. All their effort went into booze, drugs, and rock and roll music prominently in the lives of these men in the 70’s.

Most of the men wanted to get their thirty years in for their pension but in this time of auto making it was off, collecting unemployment and on the job working when the economy permitted. So, it was going to take years to be able to get that pension. I felt like it was a catch twenty-two situation for them so maybe their behaviors were warranted. Combinations of daily repetitious routine, lack of a clear sense of purpose, and guiltless self-destructive habits can make thirty years seem like an eternity. However, the life of Ben Hamper seemed like an endemic of downright insanity….His motto was, “to work less, make more money, and spend it all on booze and music“. The motto was the hard labor he did day to day.

Ben Hamper wrote an excellent description of the assembly line and American automobile industry but it was shocking to read how the workers behaved. However, this is only one man’s description of the blue collar job but there were plenty of reviews that agreed with his definition of the management and auto-workers at General Motors at that time. The umpteen stories, comical events, bad behaviors, and working on the assembly line kept the lives of these men surviving in order to receive their pay-checks. Yet, I have to say the authenticity to the blue collar voice Ben sometimes sounded like a fair stand-up comic with the intent of keeping the readers laughing through dry-irony and wisdom.

I also worked in a shoe factory for years in the 70’s and 80’s and I was on an assembly line; paid by piece-work and made good money, became one of the top stitcher’s, and created quality work. My co-workers and I had plenty of fun and laughter but we respected others and the company. I guess some men might have been friskier and thought a job is something you make the best of…and they did!!

Painfully Entertaining
By Peter
I am about ten years younger than the author and we shared so many similarities in life it is spooky. I entered the service in the early eighties and worked a very similar low end existence on an isolated duty station. The book portrays in depth what young men will sometimes due to alleviate the boredom of a spiritually unfulfilling job. The massive drinking on and off the job, the foolish and immature pranks and games, the scheming, the conflicts, and the friendships that develop among those who toil together. The problem I have with the book is that Ben Hamper never followed the course of natural evolution and progressed outside that childish mode. He suffered from a state of arrested development. As the writer we expect that the observer would have greater incite into the overall experience and not simply be narrowly focused on the small percentage of people lack the ability to evolve over time. The character arc is missing and we are stuck following rivet head to the bleak demise of his own volition. Another curious aspect of this book is what he chose not to include. I thought he might have been gay because he fails to mention any desire for companionship other than the ones he had with men at work. That theory was proven false when he briefly mentions some girl friends later in the book. He also makes it clear his father was disappointing but then mentions he has a daughter who is never given any consideration through out the book. Did he never speak to her and thus repeat the same childhood he had? This entire book seem like nothing more than a catalog of drunken GM worker stories rather than that of a man's life story. I shall not end on a negative note and should mention his style was entertaining and his humor often very on target. In the end I am glad I read it but am left somewhat unsatisfied.

Great book for the car nut in your life - entertaining.
By Black Hole Gang
Funny, not as scary as Savage Factory, this is about the shenanigans inside a U.S. pickup truck factory. It's a great gift for the car nut in your life. Ben was a writer for a local paper in Flint at one time and worked with Michael Moore also. I hear that this may become a movie. He's got a radio show in Traverse City now.
