The Best Book for Cello Beginners

I'm 27 years old and currently learning to play the cello. I've bought this book along with the Suzuki books/CD and various others. I think this is the best book to start with if you have no prior cello playing experience. With the Suzuki books you're playing more songs, while this book consists of a lot of simple exercises. For example, Suzuki for Cello Book 1 has 17 exercises/etudes, whereas Essential Elements has 193. The exercises in Suzuki are generally a little longer and closer to full songs. Suzuki Book 1 has 23 pages while this book has 48 pages.

The biggest down side to Suzuki is that there's absolutely no instructional information, and while both books assume you're working with a teacher, I think it would be harder to progress with the Suzuki book if you do not have a teacher.

I see this book as more of a prequel to the Suzuki books, but there's obviously some overlap. If you finish this book you'll likely move through the first few Suzuki books pretty quickly.

This book's overall goal seems to be teaching students how to sight read musical notation. Lots of time is spent counting beats and looking at notes and playing them on the cello as you read them. For a book that's focused more on the subtleties of technique I'd check out "The Art of Cello Playing" by Louis Potter Jr., or I'd rely on a teacher for that information.

As mentioned, this book comes with a DVD and CD, and the DVD actually has SOME instructional video, but only about 15 minutes. The rest of the DVD is just the audio of all 193 practice tracks. Also, the audio CD for Suzuki books 1 and 2 is purchased separately and is priced at about $14. This book is about the same price as Suzuki book 1 but comes with the audio CD and DVD, so I think it's also a better value.

This Essential Elements book starts with plucking the individual strings (pizzicato) and ends on the piano accompanied Bach minuet Number 2. Suzuki Book 1 stars on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star variations" and ends on the exact same Bach minuet.

What I like about Essential Elements is that it starts you off at the most basic possible level. First, you're just plucking the strings on the cello, learning where the notes correspond to the strings on the cello. There's a few exercises that prepare you for the bow without actually using it yet, but use of the bow isn't until Exercise 47. The idea is to cultivate the left hand first, and after you're comfortable with that it introduces using the right hand along with the left hand. With Suzuki you're using the bow on the first exercise, and more focus is spent on listening to the recordings than reading music. (Suzuki believed people learned languages best by listening.)

The strength of this book is that each short exercise is slightly harder than the last, usually introducing a new technical problem for each exercise. Each exercise is set up as a short and unique melody to keep it more fun. Exercises range from repeated single notes, to scales, to kids melodies (old macdonald, twinkle twinkle, frere jacques, baa baa black sheep), to melodies everyone knows (simple gifts, jingle bells, happy birthday, banana boat song, william tell overture), to various American, English, and French folk melodies.

I have been practicing cello for a while so I completed the first 46 exercises in one day. Then I did about 20 the follow day, and then about four or so a day after that. Each exercise is a little tougher than the last, but not too tough to be out of reach, so you do feel a sense of accomplishment after you finish each one.

I've found the best way to practice ALL of the exercises after #46 is to sight read them as you count beats. Even if it calls for the bow play with pizzicato first. Next do the same thing but now try it with the bow. If you've got that down then try playing along with the accompanying CD/DVD. Did you play it without any mistakes? If so then move to the next exercise, otherwise keep practicing until you get it.

If you can read music you already have a head start on this book, but if you can't I strongly recommend this book over the Suzuki ones--at least initially. Essential Elements has taught me how to read music as I play, where the Suzuki books assume you already know how to read music, or that your instructor will show you. This book's many simple exercises manage to push you along without overwhelming you. There's music that accompanies each exercise and it's there to help you train your ear. With the music it's easier to tell if you're playing in tune or if you're a little off.

I didn't mean for this to be long or a bunch of Suzuki bashing. I think you should buy this book, the Suzuki books, and every cello book you can afford. You should also watch cello tutorials (and professional performances) on YouTube and find a teacher at your local university. The more resources you have to help you learn the more successful you will be! That's true for anything! However, if I could only purchase one book this one would be it. I expect it to keep me busy for a couple months.

This is a great book to start with. After the first day I was impressed enough to purchase book 2 and 3. The only thing that could be improved upon would be more video tutorials on the DVD.

Loved the free DVD or download that came with this book. Great price point and useful information for beginner cello player. As mother of 9-year-old cello player I have enjoyed the DVD feature. Now if I could just get the cello player to review it.

I really like this. I sent for the CD and I don't understand why it doesn't show more than just how to properly hold my cello and bow. I waited for it to show more on the cd but nothing more happens. I really like the book, though.

Great gift book of freely available speech transcript

Simple Kindness

This is a bound and published edition of Saunders' commencement speech at Syracuse University in 2013. You could certainly complain that it's not really a "book", that it was originally published in the New York Times, and that it is very brief.

But it's worth reading.

What advice do you give to graduating students? Often it's about how to succeed in the world -- e.g., find something you love to do and do it. And there have been memorable commencement speeches of that type. Some go beyond that, e.g., the speech that Steve Jobs gave to graduating Stanford students in 2005.

Saunders gives a very simple message -- be kind.

He asks himself what he regrets in his own life, from the vantage point of decades that the students he is talking to haven't experienced yet. And the thing that he identifies is his indifference toward a girl in his school when he was young. He wasn't mean to her, but he ignored her when she needed kindness.

I can certainly think of the missed opportunities in my life when I wasn't kind to someone -- it would have taken so little. My life won't be any the less for having missed that last jump shot in the final seconds of a basketball game. It will be less for having turned away from someone who I could have helped have a better life. Few of us can say that we've kept the right balance of self-interest and kindness.

I've read criticisms of Saunders' speech, that he ignores the material difficulties facing students who graduate from college today, with poor employment opportunities and often carrying heavy college loan debts on into their distant futures. I would imagine those things weigh more heavily on their minds than whether or not they are kind persons. But Saunders' message is one from a vantage point he knows is decidedly not that of his audience but one he feels they could profit from -- it is better to decide what matters in your life before you are looking back on it.

I'd give the book 5 stars for content, but I'm giving it 4 as a "product" -- the speech itself is (and should be) available for free in a number of places, including video. I bought the book because . . . well, I buy George Saunders' books. I do like the idea that others have mentioned, of giving the book as a gift.

On the importance of kindness

George Saunders is a professor of English at Syracuse University and a writer of short stories, essays, novellas and children's books. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker and Harper's, among other publications.

In 2013, Saunders delivered the convocation speech at Syracuse University for the class of 2013, and shared it with The New York Times where it was reprinted with his permission.

In April of 2014 the speech was published by Random House in this little book. Mr. Saunders argues that "as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder." He understands that we all have ambitions for fame, fortune and love but urges us as much as possible to: "err in the direction of kindness. Do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial."

Although the entire graduation speech appears in The New York Times, the book is beautifully produced. The speech takes only about 15 minutes to read but each word carries weight and meaning. It is a speech to savor and re-read often. Although the speech is available online, I recommend buying the book. But in any event, the speech is absolutely worth reading.

Spectacular: This book has a heart, a soul and a brain!

While this book is a practical guide that shows teachers how to meet diverse student needs through differentiated instruction, it also manages to dig deeper and to inspire!

It is written in a highly accessible manner which is not prescriptive or didactic, but still manages to provide a way forward. It demands that teachers examine deeply held beliefs and calls out teachers on the things they do which they know are wrong and do not work, but continue to do anyway.
If you are a teacher and read this book and you continue to do the same tired things you were doing before, you have only yourself to blame.
Each chapter begins with an inspiring and deeply intellectual poem which gets to the heart of WHY teachers should change their practice.
I was so impressed with the way the author manages the delicate art of telling teachers what they need to change and that they are ultimately responsible for their student's achievement, or lack thereof.
If you are a parent, you should read this book too. It will help you to see that it is not your child who is failing, it is the teacher who is often failing your child because he/she refuses to change and see your child as an individual whose needs are important and to meet those needs.
This book motivates and educates educators and provides hope and great information to parents. I have no doubt that these authors know what teachers do and what students feel.

A very deep and intriguing novel!

I had the pleasure of reading this novel for a college class, and I must admit that it was psychologically stimulating in one sense, and poignant in another sense. The fact that the story is actually based on true events makes the novel all the more appealing.

About the Author
Ivan Castro is a graphic designer based in Barcelona, Spain, specializing in calligraphy, lettering, and typography. His work involves everything from advertising to editorial, packaging, and logo design, from big companies to gig posters. Even though he claims to have no specific style, one could say that he has a strong respect for history and popular culture. He has been working in the field for 15 years, and teaching calligraphy and lettering for 10 years in the main design schools of Barcelona. He travels, giving workshops and lectures at design festivals and conferences. His clients included Bau Design College of Barcelona, Born Losers, Congreso Internacional de Tipografía, Iconographic Magazine, Korero Press, Lee Productions, Little Victor, Los Tiki Phantoms, and El Toro Records. Ken Barber works for House Industries in Yorklyn, Delaware, a prolific type foundry. He also conducts lettering workshops at Maryland Institute, College of Art.

My new favorite. Comprehensive, fun-to-read, in-depth lettering guide.

Wherever you are in your lettering journey, this book will teach you. Unless you know everything and therefore aren't considering buying it in the first place. There are those.

I've studied and read many books and online tutorials and took Sean McCabe's Learn Lettering course, but this (aside from the business aspects of that course) is the best resource I've found. You'll learn to write different scripts, how to draw letters and then some heavy duty information on how to use that knowledge to design custom type. There's some history (which he manages to make interesting) of type to help you understand WHY different scripts are what they are.

As a calligrapher, the most helpful part for me was learning to morph my calligraphy into custom type. That was an eye-opener.

Reading the book is a little like having a conversation; Castro is warm and funny and not stiff and dry like many books on this and similar subjects. He explains the "why" many things that I knew to be true but hadn't questioned. He's just really really good at explaining stuff. Lots of aha! moments for me.

Surpasses my already-high expectations

My hopes for this book were already high, and WOW! This book is incredible. This is a thorough, thoughtful, and structured introduction to custom lettering. Castro walks you through some important fundamentals, helping you understand of letter forms, develop a useful sense of aesthetics, and shows you how to bring it together into actual execution. There is a lot of care and detail in this book, but it's also very easy to follow and understand; it's evident that Castro is an experienced teacher. He's put a lot of effort into setting the reader up for success. I cannot wait to dig into this, I feel like I'm going to be building some real knowledge and skills, and having a lot of fun doing it!

Muy rebuscado para al final ser predecible. La historia esta muy forzada, los personajes sufren de esta presión en cada momento de la historia. Lo demás como siempre, te atrapa y se lee muy rápido. No hay que olvidarse que es una obra de teatro tal vez desde ese enfoque podes cambiar un poco la perspectiva del resultado final. Buena lectura!

Para los que somos fánaticos de la saga de Harry Potter, este libro es un regalo. Es diferente porque no es narrativo como los anteriores. El tema del amor y la amistad es hermoso. Espero que JK Rowling siga escribiendo más sobre la vida de Harry Potter.

CDL Class A driver.

I grear book to have if you are a over the road truck driver (OTR). It has everything you need to know about everywhere you want to go. Plan out your route with dry eraser markers and wipe it clean when your done.

It's nice, but I wish they would update the format ...

Well, it is what it is. It's nice, but I wish they would update the format and put the restricted route information (low clearances, etc) on or near the pages with the maps, and also highlight the restricted routes with different colors. It's quite difficult to flip back and forth and find the restricted routes. Rand-McNally, you need to up your game with this; you have competition from GPS units.

A little disappointed

Very good quality as usual for Rand McNally except it doesn't list any of the truck stops anymore. Don't understand why they wouldn't. Truck stops are a major part of a truckers life.
